wireless connects to router but not internet
I've ifconfig wlan0 down and up but still no joy. Same for dhclient.
I don't know where to go next.
Suggestions?
One oddity is that with ifconfig down I'm still connected to the router. Shouldn't it be, ya'know, down?

Re: wireless connects to router but not internet
Thank you for the stupid question (which is really isn't).
I am able to access the internet on other machines. In fact, this is a dual-boot machine that I'm having trouble with. Currently I'm in the Window's partition while writing this post and internet access is solid.
So, FYI, dual boot, win 8.1 and linuxmint 15 olivia KDE
Here is what I have with the iwconfig:

Re: wireless connects to router but not internet
ok,
let's try to run this script to collect more info (don't worry it will only display your internal LAN witch is the same for 99% of home users, I bet your ip starts with 192.169.x.x and your router has 192.168.x.1?) you will have to be connected to get the script (ethernet)
Actually can you connect Mint with ethernet?

Re: wireless connects to router but not internet
I just downloaded the script using my Windows side and then switched over an ran it...so, here are the results (sorry for the wall of text--this site wouldn't let me upload an attachment with .txt)
Also, for what it's worth, I'm thinking of getting a newer release of mint. I just saw the announcement that if one has 14, 15, or 16, one should upgrade to 17.

Re: wireless connects to router but not internet
what encryption are you using on your access point?
Also delete your existing wifi connection and do a new connection. maybe some corruption in the settings.

Re: wireless connects to router but not internet
You can try a quick setup via wireless controls from the command line, and also consider using a static (fixed IP) setup to ensure a connection, if the wireless device seems to work on the Linux side

Re: wireless connects to router but not internet
When I encounter that same situation, I check that /etc/resolv.conf has 192.168.1.1 as nameserver. After ensuring that the connection works I set my dns as I wish. But for the test I always enter the router ip
Re: wireless connects to router but not internet
Hi,
to check DNS you could install namebench (package manager) and run the test.

That didn't make a difference, if I deleted it in the way you are thinking.PatH57 wrote:Also delete your existing wifi connection and do a new connection. maybe some corruption in the settings.

How does one make a fixed IP to ensure connection?DrHu wrote:You vcan try a quick setup via wireless controls from the command line, and also consider using a static (fixed IP) setup to ensure a connection, if the wireless device seems to work on the Linux side
Sorry I'm not good with the lingo, but who is the client? I can ping my router, but that's it, from my linux partition. Currently I'm on the same machine, same hard drive, different partition though using win8.1, and I can access the net fine.--you do say you get something, so it is just the IP address of the client that is the issue..

I'll take a look at those other links. Maybe it is the realtek card. what is aggravating is that it was working fine for months and then suddenly...
Also, I don't know about the BIOS settings for a Nic. I don't recall seeing one.

This is from your wifi log.[ 557.130318] rtl8192ce 0000:06:00.0 wlan0: disabling HT/VHT due to WEP/TKIP use
You are not using a secure connection. Double check your router settings.
Re: wireless connects to router but not internet
Okay, I've been using wpa. Currently using an ethernet connnection.PatH57 wrote:This is from your wifi log.[ 557.130318] rtl8192ce 0000:06:00.0 wlan0: disabling HT/VHT due to WEP/TKIP use

despire what that code says, when I login to my router, the wireless is clearly using wpa and wpa2 security. Also, other devices (TV, windows, iphone) are prompted for a password to connect.

If I do
my ethernet connection to my router, and the internet, stops promptly.
If I
nothing happens, in that I still am connected to my router.
Code: Select all
sudo ifconfig eth0 down

If I
Code: Select all
sudo ifconfig wlan0 down
Re: wireless connects to router but not internet
Well, still stuck.
Ran the namebench and took its advice to change some DNS settings.
Still no joy. My noob hunch, based on reading the links shared here, is that it's related to the driver.
But what I don't understand is why it stopped working. I also don't understand why "ifconfig wlan0 down" doesn't actually disconnect the wireless connection with my router.

Re: wireless connects to router but not internet
seems you have on ralink card that doesn't work very well with the default kernel driver.
Let's first try the patch and see if it works.
Installation
Ensure you have the necessary prerequisites:
Clone this repository:
Set it up as a DKMS module:
Build and install it:
Refresh the module list:
Ensure the native (and broken) kernel driver is blacklisted:
And reboot and check it.
Let's first try the patch and see if it works.
Installation
Ensure you have the necessary prerequisites:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic build-essential dkms
Code: Select all
git clone https://github.com/pvaret/rtl8192cu-fixes.git
Code: Select all
sudo dkms add ./rtl8192cu-fixes
Code: Select all
sudo dkms install 8192cu/1.8
Code: Select all
sudo depmod -a
Code: Select all
sudo cp ./rtl8192cu-fixes/blacklist-native-rtl8192.conf /etc/modprobe.d/
Re: wireless connects to router but not internet
THanks for your help, Pat.
I think I tried this route from a different thread, but am going forward with your step by step.
One thing I noticed, is that the current git branch has a 1.9 version, while your command
has a 1.8.
Rebooting now..
