I trid what you suggested but it did not work.

paul@paul-Presario-C500-RZ342UA-ABA ~ $ modprobe -rv wl
FATAL: Module wl not found.

I then tried using sudo

paul@paul-Presario-C500-RZ342UA-ABA ~ $ sudo modprobe -rv wl
[sudo] password for paul:
FATAL: Module wl not found.
paul@paul-Presario-C500-RZ342UA-ABA ~ $ modprobe -rv w1
FATAL: Module w1 not found.
paul@paul-Presario-C500-RZ342UA-ABA ~ $ modprobe b43
ERROR: could not insert 'b43': Operation not permitted
paul@paul-Presario-C500-RZ342UA-ABA ~ $

My wireless issue RESOLVED. I'm on Dell Vostro 1400 using Mint17 Mate
I want to thank everyone for their advice regarding this issue. i had been struggling with it for some time and found the solution here realizing that 'wl' driver in conflict was apparently the problem.
i followed the instructions as listed above; blacklisted 'wl', made sure 'b43' and 'ssb' not blacklisted, used synaptic to remove 'wl' driver (bcmwl-kernel-source), ran 'modprobe -rv wl' resulted in 'module not found', ran 'modprobe b43' but just hangs in terminal so closed terminal, used synaptic to reinstall 'firmware-b43-installer' and 'b43-fwcutter', shutdown, restart, wifi networks pop up in lower menu bar. .... all works well.
Thanks again

Good to hear it works, but that combo of packages only works for 4 of the many broadcom cards out there, do you mind posting

I cannot seem to remove wl and I cannot install b43 Please see the following:

paul@paul-Presario-C500-RZ342UA-ABA ~ $ sudo modprobe -rv wl
[sudo] password for paul:
FATAL: Module wl not found.

I am at wits end with this system. I have been using two computers to do this and in the process I screwed up my other system by using the rv command to remove wl. It worked on that machine and now I have no wireless ability on it. Short of reinatalling MINT Mate 15 on the netbook what can I do to get back wl on that system?

Please forget the issue with the second computer I used synaptic to restore it and its ok now. The main issue is the problem with the compacq laptop and the inability to remove wl and install b43 I still need help with this issue.
Again thanks for all ths support

Hi sundial;

you are asking how to remove the wl and install b43:

the Ubuntu guide https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Broad ... ireless%29 says that for a 4311 the command to remove wl is
sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source broadcom-sta-common broadcom-sta-source
________________________

chil555 has a how-to; that is a sticky: at the beginning of the Ubuntu network forum: he says

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2214110

that for a 4311 you issue the command
sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree
______________________

if you type
man modprobe
in a terminal, it says
modprobe — program to add and remove modules from the Linux Kernel

when you reach the section about
remove
it says
There is usually no reason to remove modules, but some buggy modules require it. Your distribution kernel may not have been built to support removal of modules at all.
I wasn't sure where you had sourced the modprobe -rv command .........

________________

if I clarify: you asked for a how-to; I aim to supply it above as best I can;

hi again sundial40,

I believe you've already removed wl for that machine. that's why it's giving you the modprobe error that it's not found.

now go to synaptic again and install

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree
or make sure it's installed.

Then reboot. What happens. any wireless detected?

If not then do the following once again.
in a terminal type These commands and list the outputs here.

Code: Select all

lsmod
rfkill list all
Also read the whole message : have you tried using the driver manager tool found in system pannel/menu ?
if not give it a try - it should offer you the b43 driver to install if it does install it from there.( the driver will be call linux firmware I believe)

Thank you. This removed the wl and now the system is working on wifi.
amazing how a simple software conflict will tie up a system.
Again thanks.
