Wifi Disconnects Constantly

Post by Roceso1337 »

My wifi is CONSTANTLY disconnecting. I have read every thread on every forum on the internet and cannot find a fix.
This is only when the wifi is being used, if i leave my computer on with nothing running it wont disconnect (or at least 1 in a million). But if i am watching youtube or downloading something it is CONSTANT.
All the APs in the area disapear from the connection list and the widget says "the device is not ready" like the wifi chip isnt even there.
So I either have to toggle the wifi in the network interface int he control panel or put this in the terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
But that only turns it back on until the next time it disconnects.
I am on a toshiba satellite P75-A7100 on Linux Mint 17.
My kernel is 3.16.0-031600rc1-lowlatency
Output of dmesg | grep iwl

Code: Select all

robert@Main ~ $ dmesg | grep iwl

When I search Google for

Code: Select all

intel 7260 site:kernel.org
I see a lot of hits with the same problem.
So it looks like something the Kernel-guys have to fix.
Perhaps it is possible to revert to the earlier kernel?

On the site of intel I saw some posts which suggest the problem is not Linux-only.
Add (Solved) to the topic-title of the first post when appropriate so others know they might find a solution here.

Since installing to Mint 17, my wifi is giving me hell. No matter what kernel I run (I'm on 3.15.0), it will randomly disconnect. I have to toggle the wireless applet off/on for it to come back up (which it does immediately). I've never had this problem on mint 16 even with 3.15.0 kernel nor any of the 3.14+

What can I do? Suggestions please!

Try installing an earlier version of the kernel. This worked with me.

I have a laptop with a Qualcomm Atheros QCA9565 / AR9565 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01) that worked fine in Mint 13 but started to drop all the time on Mint 17. This is a bug introduced in the newer versions of the Kernel (3.13.0-x, shipped with Mint17 doesn't work in my case).

I've browsed the internets for solutions and they didn't work or were too complicated and needing repetition everytime an update installed a new kernel or firmware version.

I've suspected of the kernel version, downloaded and installed the same version that was working on my Mint13 and voilá!
I went to

http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/kern ... 23-generic

http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/linu ... 23-generic

http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/linu ... -3.11.0-23

and downloaded the files for my architecture.

Then I went to the folder where the downloads were, opened a terminal there and ran

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

If you have all the dependences satisfied, all will go well. Reboot and in the Grub menu at boot select the line with new (old) kernel: 3.11.0-23.
Good luck with testing the Wifi! Don't forget to test all the hardware (network, sound, card readers and so on), specially if your computer is new.

If everything works fine, then you can uninstall the kernel version that wasn't working. In Mint17, boot with the working kernel and go to the Update Manager, go to View -> Linux Kernels and you have a great and easy way to do it there.

Let me know how it goes and if you need help installing this!
Bye for now,
Bruno

Same problem for me with 7260. I had been updating to the latest Ubuntu kernels (at the time 3.15) for Mint 16, and everything was perfect-- massive tx excessive tries and invalid misc had finally stopped. Then i installed 17 and got royally screwed. Kinda pisses me off that something made for LTS is so buggy and still not fixed apparently.

Trying newer kernels, power management, etc, didn't help. Something that seems to work really well for me though is to leave transmission open (with a torrent). The torrent can be paused. It seems to force the connection to stay open well. Only time it ever disconnects is when returning from sleep. Maybe I'll give the older kernels a try too.

This is not quite Mint Team's fault... I guess there must be challenges and compromises when selecting which kernel to ship on a LTS. Supporting the newest hardware vs implementing new bugs that once in a while are created in new code.

Ah well, quoting the Linux Luddites folks,
Not all change is progress.

Give the older kernels a try and let us know... My laptop is 2 months old and with 3.11.0-23 all is working solid.

I read some things about the ucode being buggy

Code: Select all

ls /lib/firmware | grep iwlwifi-7620
It seems that the newer one is buggy and I have been able to use the 7620 with 7620-8 with the original LM 17 kernel

Any reason you are using wpa supplicant and the low-latency kernel?

Code: Select all

 wget -N -t 5 -T 10 https://dl.dropbox.com/s/qjc87hzk1z5x6z0/wireless_script && chmod +x wireless_script && ./wireless_script
and post result using attachment or using code tags if text

Apparently 7260-7 is shipped w/ LM17, but syslog tells me v8 or v9 expected

Code: Select all

iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: Falling back to user helper
iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: request for firmware file 'iwlwifi-7260-8.ucode' failed.
iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: Firmware has old API version, expected v8 through v9, got v7.
iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: New firmware can be obtained from http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/.
iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: loaded firmware version 22.1.7.0 op_mode iwlmvm
I replaced v7 with v9, and it was perfect the 1st day, but 2nd day same problem popped up. No instant disconnect at resuming from sleep at least, so a bit more stable. I'll give v8 a try later, then older kernels if needed.

Using an older kernel should be easy if you haven't purged them. You can choose a previous Linux Mint 17 version in the grub boot menu and select other kernels that have been installed if they haven't been uninstalled.

The laptop that I have used 2 different 7620 cards in doesn't like kernel upgrades for whatever reason so it is still on 3.13 and it has no wifi issues.

I'm on Linux Mint 14, kernel version 3.5.0-170-generic(x86_64); I'm not sure if this is the same issue OP is having or not.

As of recently, I've noticed that unless my laptop is plugged into the charger, I can't use Wifi. I'll have a connection, and when I unplug my power cable, I'll maintain a connection for a few minutes, then I lose all access to my network. I know for a fact that this was not happening (at least) June 1st-June 6th (or anytime before that). Not sure what could be causing it.

My laptop is an HP Spectre 14.

I have the same problem as OP, randomly disconnecting WiFi every few minutes. Not only does it disconnect but my network isn't visible in the list of available networks when this happens. Disabling and re-enabling WiFi or logging out and back in is the only fix.

This happens with both Cinnamon and XFCE on Mint 17.

As I recently posted in another topic
For the benefit of other forum members the Linux Firmware update (in mint update, level 5) ,from 1.127.2 to 1.127.4 appears to have several updates for both wireless firmware and bluetooth firmware (if I understand the changelog correctly), so if your are having issues with either of these it may be worth checking the changelog and seeing if your chipset is affected by the update.

Hope this info reaches any affected people
I believe I saw mention of repeated disconnects in the changelog, I'm in no position to know how relevant this is to any of your issues though, sorry.

thanks for the headsup. I checked the changelog. Only see updated to newest firmware for intel 3160 / 7260 / 7265 wifi, but it also fixed a lot of intel bluetooth issues. I'm pleased to at least be able to say that my bluetooth headset is FINALLY WORKING!! I'll chime in again in a day to see how the wifi front goes.

Yeah, I've got the linux-firmware update a few days ago from a apt dist-upgrade, but there are no mentions on the changelog about my wifi card.

BTW, I've just tried the kernel 3.13.0-30, but still a no go for my hardware, it keeps on dropping the wifi.
So I'm keeping the old working kernel...

Hi all!

Just to let you know that I've installed the 3.13.0-32-generic kernel last weekend and so far wifi is working fine with the Qualcomm Atheros QCA9565 / AR9565 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01).

Big  !!!

To install it on Mint 17, I've done a:

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
sudo apt install linux-image-generic-lts-trusty linux-headers-generic-lts-trusty

Cheers!

I had this same problem for over a year and finally was told to do 3 things.

1. Change network settings from WAP/WAP2 to only WAP2
2. Set IPv6 to Ignore
3. Follow the directions on this link: http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/realt ... st-5443987. Well, that link is in German so someone told me to just do the following:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r) linux-headers-generic
wget media.cdn.ubuntu-de.org/forum/attachments/39/19/5443987-rtl_92ce_92se_92de_8723ae_88ee_0012.0207.2013.tar.gz
tar xvf 5443987-rtl_92ce_92se_92de_8723ae_88ee_0012.0207.2013.tar.gz
cd rtl_92ce_92se_92de_8723ae_88ee_linux_mac80211_0012.0207.2013
make
sudo make install
sudo depmod -a
sudo update-initramfs -u
sudo cp -r firmware/* /lib/firmware

Having no network experience but also so frustrated with my intermittent WIFI issues, I blindly followed the directions. They worked! My issues disappeared. I stayed connected and was VERY happy. :D :D :D :D

I was told that everytime a kernel update happens I would need to redo the above steps. I saved the extracted drivers and I built a little script that ran from the "Make" command on. That fixed my issue. I just ran my script when I started getting intermittent issues again.

Fast forward to today...............
So, I have a new laptop and guess what, I have intermittent WIFI issues again. Ugh!

My old laptop had
Realtek RTL81888CE Network Controller
Atheros AR8192 Ethernet Controller

My new laptop (Dell)
Realtek RTL8101E / RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet Controller
Atheros QCA9565 / AR9565 Wireless Network Adapter

So my questions for this dumb network idiot (me) are:
1. Can someone help me with how to change the directions above so this would work for the different hardware I have now?
2. I found a way to change the security settings WAP / WAP2 but there isn't an option for just WAP2 now. How do I make that change?

Remember, I don't understand this network stuff so it will have to be in plain speak.....

The old way won't work with the Atheros wifi chipset were your old had a Realtek wifi chipset. Open a new terminal window CTRL+ATL+t and copy and paste the next command using mouse

Code: Select all

wget -N -t 5 -T 10 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/57264241/wireless_script && chmod +x wireless_script && ./wireless_script
It will make a file named wireless-info in your home folder, the file may be .tar.gz(attach the file) or .txt(copy contents and paste into post using Code tags)
Locked
