Bluetooth not recognised in Mint 13 Mate

I have a HP 8730w with a BCM92045NMD Broadcom Bluetooth module (HP Part No.: 398393-002). I have Mint 13 32-Bit Mate installed. Almost everything works, except the Bluetooth. Neither lspci nor lsusb lists anything to remotely resemble Bluetooth:

Occasionally, the Blueman Bluetooth Manager Utility shows the Bluetooth symbol in the taskbar but klicking on it only reveals the note that no Bluetooth adapter is pluged into my system.

Does anyone know how to get this Bluetooth working? Do I need to load a specific kernel module? If so, which one and how? My Linux literacy still leaves a lot of room for improvements. Any help is much appreciated.

Since the last software update some things have changed on my system. 1. rfkill now lists Bluetooth as well:

2. I now have 2 Bluetooth Icons displayed in the Taskbar. One is from the Blueman Applet with several options for Bluetooth connection handling, the other seems to be the soft switch to switch Bluetooth on an off. This second icon is greyed out and when I move the mouse over the Icon the pop-up tip always states "Bluetooth disabled". Clicking on this icon reveals a menu with 3 options, "Bluetooth: On", "Turn off Bluetooth" and "Preferences". The "Bluetooth: On" option is greyed out. The "Preferences" menu item always states that Bluetooth is disabled and gives the option to turn Bluetooth on. However, I can click the "Turn on Bluetooth" button as much as I like, Bluetooth remains disabled.

According to rfkill Bluetooth should be on. According to the Blueman software it isn't.

Do I need to load some special driver or firmware as a kernel module to get this Broadcom Bluetooth module working? So far sources on the internet haven't been too helpful to find a solution for this problem. Aside from the abundance of Broadcom related problems in the various Linux distributions, I didn't find any useful specifics regarding this particular Broadcom chip.

I once more try to bump this request since no one has replied so far and I haven't found a solution yet.

All info so far is still status quo, except the rfkill output, which sometimes lists Bluetooth (alongside WLAN) and on the next reboot doesn't list Bluetooth at all.

Is there any firmware available, respectively required, to enable the BCM92045NMD Broadcom Bluetooth? I have already tried to add btusb via modprobe. However, upon the next reboot the btusb has disappeared again from the lsmod list. As you can see from my previous post, if Bluetooth is listed in the rfkill output, it is both soft and hard unblocked. Nevertheless,the Blueman App consistently reports Bluetooth as disabled.

I suspect that "03f0:031d Hewlett-Packard" is your bluetooth device but I am not sure how it would need to be supported in btusb as I don't have LM13 but based on the latest btusb from bluetooth next, I would look for

03f0:031d seems to be the USB to IDE interface of my docking station which connects to the (second) Multibay DVD drive (iProduct 80 USB Multibay IDE 2.468). 12bd:a02f seems to be my joystick (bInterfaceClass 3 Human Interface Device). Neither broadcom nor bluetooth is in the output of lsusb -v.

After some digging and searching on the internet, the ID for the Broadcom BCM92045NMD should be 0a5c:2101.

Can you try a live version of LM17 without installing to see if the lsusb results are different?

I have tried the recently downloaded LM 17.1 64-Bit Mate to no avail. lsusb lists the same devices and "omits" Bluetooth respectively Broadcom. I am starting to suspect the build in Bluetooth device might be defective. What I haven't tried yet is to run this notebook with Windows. If I find time and a spare disk, I might just set up WinXP to see if all components are fully functional. So far I'm not in dire need of Bluetooth. However, since it is present and others have claimed to get it to work on the same model with LM13, I would like to achieve the same success.

Have you checked BIOS to see if it might be disabled there?

Yes, I have checked and it is enabled there. What is puzzling, occasional I get the Bluetooth symbols displayed in the panel and then rfkill lists Bluetooth as both hard and soft unblocked but Blueman still claims it is disabled and there is no way of switching Bluetooth on.

Check to see if that bluetooth card is fully seated as it seems to be an intermittent problem

I will do, but that may take some time since the card is wired to the main board and I need to disassemble the notebook quite a bit to check both ends of the cable. The card itself is properly plugged in to its end of the cable and firmly secured in its compartment. I did that check when I first got this notebook.

Thanks for your input. It seems there is no quick and easy solution available at present. I will perform the required checks in due course and report back with the results. However, this could take some time, I'm presently in the process of changing jobs and need the notebook in its current working state.
