<Solved> BCM4311 not working in Cinnamon 17
I am brand spanking new, so don't hit me with tons of things.
I tried the http://linuxg.net/how-to-fix-broadcom-b ... inux-mint/ topic and it does not help. I tried a few other things and nothing works. Plus my Bluetooth won't work.
I have an Compaq nx6325 running from the DVD and yes I verified the MD5SUM. I used mintwifi to find my card. Wired works.
I have spent 2 hours restarting and retrying everything.
Thanks, Fred

Re: BCM4311 not working in Cinnamon 17
Try and then follow the instructions on http://linuxg.net/how-to-fix-broadcom-b ... inux-mint/
Code: Select all
sudo modprobe -r bcma
Code: Select all
sudo modprobe -r b43
Re: BCM4311 not working in Cinnamon 17
Hi Jeremy,
Well, that was a 50% success rate.
Here is what happened:
mint@mint ~ $ sudo modprobe -r bcma
modprobe: FATAL: Module bcma is in use.
mint@mint ~ $
mint@mint ~ $
mint@mint ~ $ sudo modprobe -r b43
mint@mint ~ $
Am I barking up the wrong tree with this laptop?
I think it is from 2005 and it has a dual AMD Turion64 processor, good graphics card, little shy on memory only 812Mb, but it can be bumpd to 4Gb.
Thanks, Fred

You should be able to modprobe -r bcma after b43FredY42 wrote:Hi Jeremy,

You could always install lm17 and see if the instructions work after updates are done. If the system runs slow or has other issues you could always install LM Maya(13) over it. Maya still has a few years of support- until April 2017
Re: BCM4311 not working in Cinnamon 17
Remembering I am brand new at this...
Interesting I was reading this site https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... /mint-xfce
13 Maya is the base(?) what desktop(?) would I want? Cinnamon, Xfce?
What is your opinion on dual boot and recovering from that if it goes astray?
Also I am going to try USB live do you feel will that emulate better?
Thanks, Fred

Re: Re: BCM4311 not working in Cinnamon 17
I would pick MATE desktop and live USB is a lot faster than running the DVD in my experience.FredY42 wrote:Remembering I am brand new at this...

I haven't had any problems installing as dual boot but back up what you have and have any additional recovery discs
Re: BCM4311 not working in Cinnamon 17
I switched to Maya as you suggested, still had to go through all the rigamarole to get WiFi working, but at least it works.
Blue tooth doesn't, so my mouse is worthless. It keeps asking to me to authenticate my mouse, but it never does. I finally shut it off. I have looked for a solution, but everything is above my skill level. They "talk", but don't show how. When you are brand spanking new you need to led by the hand. Do you know of a solution.
BTW The first Maya I tried had a bad MD5 sum, the second one was an OEM version, so when I stopped the installer it jumped to live. I set up a persistent partition on the USB using PenDriveLunix. I am about to try a reboot and see what happens
So far I am pretty discouraged with all this. After a few years you would think they could get it straight. BlueTooth has been around a lot longer than Maya.
Thanks, Fred

Re: BCM4311 not working in Cinnamon 17
It has been a while since I used a bluetooth mouse but usually there is a button you press and hold for a few seconds and then use the pc to scan for it- add device in LM. You may have to search to find the pairing code but usually it is a simple pin, 0000, 1111, 1234
(Solved) BCM4311 not working in Cinnamon 17
Totally forgot about the connect button on the mouse. So that cured that problem.
Pulled down another version (not OEM) put it on the USB, used the code below, fiddled a little bit and now everything is working. Even shut it down and restarted it to prove it.
++++++++++++++++++++++
sudo modprobe -r b43
sudo modprobe -r bcma
sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree
sudo modprobe b43
sudo su
echo b43 >> /etc/modules
exit
+++++++++++++++++++++
Off to try installing my old network printer.
Thanks for all the help
Last question what is a good resource for understanding the code (what it accomplished) I used above and also how to modify the "distro" to my liking?
Cheers, Fred
