Mint 17 wifi issues vs 16

Post by Felony »

I just cleanly installed Mint 17 and am getting random disconnects on my built in centrino wifi built in card when I never had any issues on 16. I have to simply click the wifi icon on the panel to off then on to get it to immediately reconnect. Any ideas?

Thanks

Never had problems on the machine with earlier Mints, but M17 Cinnamon (live USB) failed to recognize the Broadcom adapter on my Dell laptop so no wifi at all. Googling suggested it might be driver support. At the bottom of the System Settings box under Hardware there's a Device Driver widget, It indicated a Broadcom driver was available and I was able to install it from there.

Not familiar with your adapter, but checking the driver is worth a try. Good luck.
TRUST BUT VERIFY any advice from anybody, including me. Mint/Ubuntu user since 10.04 LTS. LM20 64 bit XFCE (Dell 1520). Dual boot LM20 XFCE / Win7 (Lenovo desktop and Acer netbook). Testing LM21.1 Cinnamon and XFCE Live for new Lenovo desktop.

Thanks, Jeremy.

I tried the first fix and I would get an immediate disconnection, but an immediate retry to connect again. The problem was was that it would show all available networks, try to connect, but not connect back to my access point.

The odd thing is just when it randomly drops, like I mentioned before, my network won't even be visible until I simply click off/on the wireless app on the status bar.

For the life of me I can't see what changed between Mint 16/17 clean installs. Keep in mind, the frequency might be simply every 30-45mins to a few hours. Nothing else has changed.

Any other ideas guys?

The first part

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe -r iwlwifi
removed the driver so a disconnect is normal
The second command puts the driver back in with a parameter option to disable the 11n

You can actually find the parameter options for any module(driver) that is listed in lsmod and then some with the modinfo <module>
The options for iwlwifi are

Code: Select all

 modinfo iwlwifi | grep parm
parm: swcrypto:using crypto in software (default 0 [hardware]) (int)
parm: 11n_disable:disable 11n functionality, bitmap: 1: full, 2: disable agg TX, 4: disable agg RX, 8 enable agg TX (uint)
parm: amsdu_size_8K:enable 8K amsdu size (default 0) (int)
parm: fw_restart:restart firmware in case of error (default true) (bool)
parm: antenna_coupling:specify antenna coupling in dB (defualt: 0 dB) (int)
parm: wd_disable:Disable stuck queue watchdog timer 0=system default, 1=disable, 2=enable (default: 0) (int)
parm: nvm_file:NVM file name (charp)
parm: bt_coex_active:enable wifi/bt co-exist (default: enable) (bool)
parm: led_mode:0=system default, 1=On(RF On)/Off(RF Off), 2=blinking, 3=Off (default: 0) (int)
parm: power_save:enable WiFi power management (default: disable) (bool)
parm: power_level:default power save level (range from 1 - 5, default: 1) (int)
The next time it disconnects, try

Code: Select all

dmesg | tail
Can you try a different router?

Forgive me. I'm a Linux newbie who just started at mint 16. I was trying to just see if y'all knew what (if any) difference there was between the two distros. When I was running 16, I had no problems, even when I upgraded the Kernel. When I installed 17, is when the random disconnects started happening, so thinking it might have something to do with 17 being built on a different kernel, I upgraded the 17 kernel to the same as I was running on 16 just to see if that might have been the problem, but no dice.

I can't use a different router, unfortunately, since all I have is the default FIOS router that comes with Verizon.

I really appreciate y'alls help, and am still open to trying things. I was just coming from a logical angle by trying to see if any of y'all know what was changed.

That is something no one other than somebody who has done it with the same computer can really answer. How about

Code: Select all

iwlist wlan0 scan
and check

Code: Select all

ls lib/firmware | grep iwlwifi-6000g2b

it should have been

Can you change the security on the wifi router to WPA2-AES?

Right now it's set on WPA2. Is there an AES encryption to try?

Also, I upgraded the kernel last night to 3.15, but the random disconnects remained. If it wasn't for just this one issue, Mint 17 would be a dream come true.

Code: Select all

uname -a
I would try the 3.11 kernel also since that is what lm16 used
The command should show what kernel is being used

It almost seems like power management might be enabled

Code: Select all

for parms in /sys/module/iwlwifi/parameters/*; do echo -e "\n $parms"; cat $parms; done
There should be 4 or 5 security options on your router

I do have TLP installed, but I did on 16 also. I wonder if you are on to something there.

So, you think I should downgrade to the 3.11?

Please post results from the above commands, TLP may have changed them and TLP might be more effective with LM17 than it was with 16

It could be the problem, look through /var/log/dmesg for anything related to TLP

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep TLP
might work but you might miss something compared to opening the dmesg file with a text editor

Code: Select all

gedit /var/log/dmesg

Maybe I should try to reinstall TLP or remove it altogether. I wonder if it is incorrectly identifying a lack of network use and shutting it down even though I'm on AC.
