Mint 17 wifi issues vs 16

[Felony]

I just cleanly installed Mint 17 and am getting random disconnects on my built in centrino wifi built in card when I never had any issues on 16. I have to simply click the wifi icon on the panel to off then on to get it to immediately reconnect. Any ideas?

Never had problems on the machine with earlier Mints, but M17 Cinnamon (live USB) failed to recognize the Broadcom adapter on my Dell laptop so no wifi at all. Googling suggested it might be driver support. At the bottom of the System Settings box under Hardware there's a Device Driver widget, It indicated a Broadcom driver was available and I was able to install it from there.

Not familiar with your adapter, but checking the driver is worth a try. Good luck.

I tried the first fix and I would get an immediate disconnection, but an immediate retry to connect again. The problem was was that it would show all available networks, try to connect, but not connect back to my access point.

The odd thing is just when it randomly drops, like I mentioned before, my network won't even be visible until I simply click off/on the wireless app on the status bar.

For the life of me I can't see what changed between Mint 16/17 clean installs. Keep in mind, the frequency might be simply every 30-45mins to a few hours. Nothing else has changed.

Any other ideas guys?

The first part

sudo modprobe -r iwlwifi

removed the driver so a disconnect is normal
The second command puts the driver back in with a parameter option to disable the 11n

You can actually find the parameter options for any module(driver) that is listed in lsmod and then some with the modinfo <module>

Can you try a different router?

Forgive me. I'm a Linux newbie who just started at mint 16. I was trying to just see if y'all knew what (if any) difference there was between the two distros. When I was running 16, I had no problems, even when I upgraded the Kernel. When I installed 17, is when the random disconnects started happening, so thinking it might have something to do with 17 being built on a different kernel, I upgraded the 17 kernel to the same as I was running on 16 just to see if that might have been the problem, but no dice.

I can't use a different router, unfortunately, since all I have is the default FIOS router that comes with Verizon.

I really appreciate y'alls help, and am still open to trying things. I was just coming from a logical angle by trying to see if any of y'all know what was changed.

It could be the problem, look through /var/log/dmesg for anything related to TLP

Maybe I should try to reinstall TLP or remove it altogether. I wonder if it is incorrectly identifying a lack of network use and shutting it down even though I'm on AC.
