[SOLVED] Cant connect to wifi

hi everyone, today I installed Mint17. All my hardware are working, except i cant connect to wifi even thought i typed the right password.
I could connect to home wifi using the same laptop + hardware in LMDE 201403 or Windows
with ubuntu 14 04 i couldnt and now with mint 17 I cant either.
but strangely sometimes after restart it suddenly managed to connect to wifi. After next restartings it cant anymore.

Where should I take a look at? which kind of commands should I use?

This LM17 managed to connect once before(with much slow speed than LMDE)
So I think it should still be able to reconnect, but since restart it cant anymore. May be I will try to reinstall LM17 tomorrow and restart a bit, if I get lucky I will run those command you gave me when it is able to connect.

I have one laptop that absolutely refuses to boot up on an upgraded kernel, it is a year old Toshiba Satellite. I suspect it has a patched kernel module and when I update the kernel, the needed module isn't patched.

What happened with your update kernel attempts that you had to reinstall? If you get a grub menu at boot, select previous version and then pick what kernel worked last

The pic is similar to what I see. Uninstalling a bad kernel is simple

those kernel update happened long ago i dont remember what or why i did them anymore.
some was stopped by myself cause it ran way too long. some might have succeed but the hardware or something didnt work like I expected so i just reinstalled (using fsarchiver)
also I am kind of lost when building kernel by myself so I think I'd better not update kernel


Today I reinstalled LM17 using fsacrchiver. in first boot it connected to WIfi automatically using previous password, so i didnt have to do anything.
So I grabed all information . after restarting : bye bye wifi as i expected ^^

in connected moment of LM17 the rmmod rtl disconnected wifi
the modprobe: it still managed to connect back to wifi after 1 fail try.

in next restart it cant connect anymore

Do you have an installation disc or usb that you used to install LM17? Is there a /lib/firmware/rtlwifi currently in your LM17 install or in lib/firmware/{kernel version}?

Screenshot is from LMDE + USB stick which i used to install LM17 also the program I used to create that USB (Unetbootin didnt work so I used that one) I dont see any lib/firmware on it

Screenshot-rtlwifi was made in LM17 and ironically it is having internet at this moment. Should I take any information from LM17 now?

I would copy the lib/firmware/rtlwifi to the desktop just in case

Hopefully it keeps working. You would have to boot the USB to see the files in file system. I copied some files when booted to the live version to get my BT working.

Another option would be to use backported modules from an older kernel but if it keeps working, nothing more will be needed. If it does fail again after sleep or reboot do

also updated using mint update since i saw linux driver package there
after 2 restart it can connect to wifi, so i made a back up of current os using fsarchiver and restart again twice and both managed to connect to wifi. right now i am in LM17 and it work thought it is slower than LMDE.
I still need to observe it 2 more days. tomorrow i might reinstall it and update to see if update solved the problem or what else

yeah I'm using LM17 at this moment and for previous post.
AFter that I restarted --> no connection, restarted again now i have connection again.
that is why i think i will need 2 more days to check this and also reinstall + update to see if update solved this problem

PS: I'm using LM17 Mate not cinnemon and 64 bit

when the connection fails. I have heard that some have ditched the network manager for WICD network manager and there is probably a tutorial on how to install it
