new install, wireless network recognized, but cannot connect

Post by timsch »

I have a build that I want to install mint 16, thinking that this distro should be the best chance to get it working. However, I am unable to get a wifi connection. The wifi network is recognized, but when I try to connect, it fails to complete.

The output of inxi -Nn indicated that wlan0 was down, so I attempted to bring it up, but inxi -Nn again showed it to be down

Try LM17 and see if that works better as support for LM16 ends in July. LM17 will be supported for 5 years

I've had wifi issues with other distro's I've tried on this machine as well.

I installed LM16 on another machine and wifi works fine.

Have you tried the 3.14.4 kernel? The changelog mentioned some module fixes for rtl chipsets

I'll check into the later kernel. For all of that, I'll probably just take the advice of the 1st response and download 17 and try that.

After seeing this

I'm having similar problems and have a post near here. I still don't know why my wireless driver suddenly stopped being activated during the boot process, but at least I can manually activate it using modprobe. Is that what you tried?

sudo modprobe rtl8192ce

sudo modprobe rtl8192ce
Does

Code: Select all

lspci
or

Code: Select all

inxi -N
identify your network cards and drivers before using modprobe? Is rtl8192ce on a blacklist?

Using
inxi -Nn
As you did in an earlier post is what identified your rtl8192ce driver to me. I don't know about any blacklist. Using modprobe plus the wifi driver name certainly let's me manually activate my wifi network card, and it then immediately connects.
