[SOLVED] BCM4311 802.11b/g Not Working on Linux Mint 17 RC

Post by confusedMusican »

Hi, I am a newbie to Linux Mint. I updated recently my old Acer Aspire 5100 from Petra to Qiana and my Wireless Card is not working anymore.

When I had Petra I installed the linux-firmware-nonfree_1.14ubuntu1_all.deb and it got working again, but then when updating to Qiana I tried the same and it didn't work. I don't know what to do!

Here is the mintWifi result:

try this command in a terminal and see if it works.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source
Then do this one

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe b43
wait a minute and see if it's working

First code worked, but I am running sudo modprobe b43 for about one hour and it still didn't finish processing, is this normal?

no it's not normal. reboot and try again.

if it still does not work try the following in this order.

Go to system settings > additional drivers.
see if it offers to install any.

If it gives you the b43 install it.

If not then type the following commands in a terminal and list the outputs here.

Code: Select all

lsmod
rfkill list all

Hello.

I have the same problem.

Image

I have re-installed LM 17.1 32 bit Mate on my Acer Aspire 9410z three times now from the DVD over one week, after trying too many broadcom 4311 suggestions online.

Had Ubuntu 8.10 working on this laptop for about 5 years (replacing the buggy disaster that was Vista, that came on this machine), and now everything is complaning that its outdated and refuses to update (firefox, chrome can't even install, youtube, etc.).
Can't remember how I got broadcom working then, but I do remember manually having to get it working after the 8.10 clean install.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package 'bcmwl-kernel-source' is not installed, so not removed
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 437 not upgraded.

Code: Select all

There is no 'system settings' or 'additional drivers' control panel when i search the mint menu?!
not in 17.1 anymore?

I did find Driver Manager:

There are two b43 drivers, one "legacy" and the other "normal". I loaded the "normal" one for my bcm4306, and worked (not with Mint but with Linux Lite in an old HP laptop). This is a problematic driver indeed!
