New Install Wifi Connects Only Momentarily

Post by archbot »

Hello all!

Running a fresh install of Linux Mint 16 XFCE 64 bit on my HP Envy M6 Sleekbook with an AMD A10 processor, Radeon graphics card. Network card: Ralink corp. RT3290 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe

This was an issue I had while running the Live USB and continues on my installation. Upon first starting up, I can connect to my home wifi fine, but it disconnects shortly after (it seems to be as soon as anything tries to connect - firefox, apt-get update, etc) and won't reconnect. It shows Ethernet Disconnected and Wifi Disconnected. Rebooting repeats the results.

Here's some terminal output for mintWifi, lspci, and inxi -Nn

Any ideas? I found several almost similar threads, but couldn't get any results. Thanks for suggestions in advance.

Never had a machine with Ralink card but found a couple of threads on ubuntu Forums - that may contain help.

and

Seems that with the 3.8 kernel there was a problem with that wireless chip set.
I'm not sure but you can check which kernel is in use with this command:

Code: Select all

uname -r

Thanks for the response!

I got the driver downloaded & extracted, edited the config.mk file as directed, but when I go to run make I get the following error:

Code: Select all

archbot@archbot ~/Downloads/DPO_RT3290_LinuxSTA_V2600_20120508 $ make
make -C tools
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/archbot/Downloads/DPO_RT3290_LinuxSTA_V2600_20120508/tools'
gcc -g bin2h.c -o bin2h
bin2h.c:1:19: fatal error: stdio.h: No such file or directory
 #include <stdio.h>
                   ^
compilation terminated.
make[1]: *** [all] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/archbot/Downloads/DPO_RT3290_LinuxSTA_V2600_20120508/tools'
make: *** [build_tools] Error 2
If it matters, uname -r says I'm using kernel version 3.11.0-12-generic.

Anybody know why I'm getting this error?

I'm having the very same issue with the very same results: error 2. This is when I open the new terminal to try to make. I know I'm doing something wrong but I just can't put my finger on it. In my case it won't even recognize it. I'll be following this post to see if there is any solution. Thanks.

I'm having the exact same problem with the same wireless card on a HP Envy m6 Notebook. Both with Mint 16 and 17.

It first occurred when I updated from 15 to 16. Wireless is working and active upon startup, but as soon as it tries to actually do anything it dies and refuses to be resurrected. Doesn't matter whether I'm running from CD or hard drive.

I was too busy to fiddle about much at the time, so I simply reverted to 15, where the wireless works. (Though it is a tad unstable; It tends to disconnect under anything more than a light load, eg when watching a YouTube video. Oddly enough there is rarely a problem with streaming [live] video. Fortunately it's a simple matter of turning it off&on to reset the connexion.)

Now that 17 is out, and 15 has reached the end of its support, I'd like to find a more permanent solution.

I too will be keeping an eye on this subject (and others like it).

ETA: Problem disappeared with v2 of the Qiana iso. Still no clue what caused it though.
