The wifi card has a BCM4306 Rev 2 chipset which needs the b43legacy firmware. I installed the firmware and I am able to see the networks but unfortunately I can not connect to any of these.
Your support is very much appreciated.

Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service(8)
utility, e.g. service smbd reload
Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an
Upstart job, you may also use the reload(8) utility, e.g. reload smbd
