Wireless recommendations

Post by alamb200 »

Hi All,

I raised a question about how to get a Netgear WG511 v2 PCMCIA card to work in my laptop running Mint 16 Mate edition but had no response back.

Instead of this then can any one recommend what I can use that will work with Mint?

This is for an old Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop.

Thanks,

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for your replies to this post but I am trying to get this working on this post:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=163188
I may have already posted the info you need there, if not please let me know what you need and I will post it.
My idea with this post was just to get an idea of what I can use straight out of the box with Mint.
Thanks again,

[snip] can any one recommend what I can use that will work with Mint?

This is for an old Dell Inspiron 1150
I am using an Alfa AWUS036nh on a Dell Inspiron 1200, running Linux Mint 17.
I could not get it to work until I ran the following commands:

Code: Select all

apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r`
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
shutdown -r now
In hindsight it would have been smarter if I'd rebooted after each to see which command made a difference because I'm not sure which of these actually are required. I'm guessing the first command is probably covered by the update and upgrade commands, but I don't know, so I include it here.

Hope this helps!

with my old Dell laptop, that has no inbuilt wireless & desktop PCs,
- had good success with Netgear WG111v2 usb adapters.

work well on linux & win_xp,
the WN111v2 works on win_7.

both are cheap to obtain, which helps !.
