RT3290 works on Live CD but not after hard drive install

Post by Tazzin »

Ok, I'm semi new to linux, be gentle (hehe).. Order of testing wifi.. Linux Mint 16 Petra 32 bit..

Ran liveCD from disc to check a few things out.. wifi found and connect to my router just fine.
The instant I installed same version to hard drive.
- Wifi finds my router and sees correct security but when I type my password to connect router it doesn't.. never does connect, but re-finds and retries connection upon failed connection attempts
note.. I have tried with hardline connected and not connected, this doesn't matter.

I have tried re-installing Linux Mint, this didn't matter either

ANY help will be greatful. I'm at a complete loss.. Also my laptop is a HP 7245us if that helps any A10 AMD cpu.

AGAIN, if you are wanting more informaiton PLEASE specific about how to get what you need, i'm semi fluent with Linux but I still have a lot to learn

Just as a followup, i'm going to try the 64bit install to see if that makes any difference while I'm waiting on help.

Hello, and welcome to the Linux Mint forums!

I have a laptop with the ralink RT3290 wifi adapter as well. This adapter is a royal pain to get working correctly. What I ended up doing was buying a relatively cheap USB wifi adapter. My wifi adapter cost roughly $40.00 CAD, which is about the same in US dollars, give or take $5.00. If getting the ralink adapter working is an absolute must, there is one solution, but it didnt work for me. This solution does carry a serious risk, as I got kernel panics after installing the wifi driver. If you want to continue, the link to the ubuntu thread is below.

http://askubuntu.com/questions/253632/h ... rd-working

Also, I believe the website for the official drivers is corrupted or down, and neither dropbox nor the official site guide worked for me.

All in all, USB wifi adapters would be my preferred solution. Again, they are relatively cheap. Make sure you get one with an atheros (I belive its atheros? correct me if I am wrong) chipset, and you should be able to connect to wifi out of the box with a really strong signal.

All the best,
JBS.

Ya I saw some information about what you are talking about. I don't think I want to venture off to that extent yet.. I DO have a USB Dlink N, um somewhere, but the weird thing is that it works just fine when running from LiveCD but doesn't when the OS is installed.. I'm actually in the process of installing the 64 bit Cinnamon version of Petra.. so i'll reply back with more information the next hour or so. Thanks again for the information on this model of network wifi adapter..

ok, well here is the result. I installed 64bit version.. again, the livecd worked fine, upon installation to hard drive, i tried the wifi, it found router and I attempted to sign in. It took a bit but it connected, um for a little bit.. not exhibiting same behavior as before, won't connect..

SO my question comes down to.. What is a good reliable but decently cheap mini/micro usb wifi adapter that will install just fine on linux mint 16?

I'm now open to suggestions on this..

Thanks again for all the help..

I'd try your dlink adapter first, as that is what I use for my linux installation on my laptop. I'm not a hardware expert, so I don't know what would be the best adapter for you. However, if you search the forums/google you should find some answers. I believe its the atheros chipset that works best nateively in Linux, and I also believe that dlink adapters use that chipset. Again, I'm not a hardware expert. My best advice is to try your dlink adapter. If that's a no go then do some reasearch and post back when you have your preffered adapter ready for purchase. :)
