Linux Mint 16 Petra: Don't show/view w-fi networks

Post by ChristofferHN »

Oh boy. I don't really know what to start with. Hi, I quess? I can start with my story first maybe?

I installed Linux/GNU a couple of days ago - a 64bit Linux Mint to be more specific - and the installation did well. I downloaded Linux Mint 16 Petra here (http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=144), burned it on a DVD-R, turned off my MacBook Pro to reboot it. I got into the "program" running (actually the DVD, right?) and installed Linux. There was three things I needed to have to install it: a amount of so-so much space. Checked! And a charging cable. I had that too! But the third one I didn't have, and that was a network connected. We don't have a router, you see. We have a wi-fi network. (Or ... a wireless router? I am not sure if it's named that. But anywho, we don't have a wire to it. Don't know what the name of somenthing like that is called.) The problem I had with connecting to Internet was this: http://i.imgur.com/741Cw83.jpg

As you can see, when holding over the thingy-wingy that looks like a cable, no networks gets up. It just says Connected to the wired network. And when I click on it, it shows me the black box like shown on the image (http://i.imgur.com/741Cw83.jpg).

Belive me, I've tried anything in the power of my hand. I've spent plenty hours of hours of many hours of searching on the web to find a solution, and haven't find any. Not on DuckDuckGo.com, not on Startpage.org, not on Yahoo!, not Blackle.com and not even on Google. Neither of these search engines, regardless of how many times I've searched on different things, gave me a answer that worked. I even went so far to take the computer with me at school and ask my class mates, but they didn't have a clue. I also asked the teachers, but they didn't have time or didn't know what Linux/GNU was even. The caretaker had time, but he's kinda old and just asked why I have my computer on English. (Yes, my first language isn't English as you may yet have understood, but I very much like English, so, yeah ...)

Oh, and in the "READ: How to get help!" it also says that I should post the code I get in terminal when using the inxi-command. Here's what I get:

Code: Select all

CPU-Dual core Intel Core2 Duo CPU P8600 (-MCP-) clocked at 798.000 Mhz Kernel-3.
11-0-12-generic x86 64 Up-2:45 Mem-371.0/3696.3MB HDD-250.1GB(1.5% used) Procs-1
43 Client-Shell inxi-1.8.4
Btw since I didn't have Internet on my computer I used a mobile phone to write all this, so sorry if it's any bad writing og grammar. And as said, I ain't a native language speaker when it comes to English.

If it gets to any question about my problem I'll gladly answer it, but this pretty much sums it up: I installed Linux Mint 16 Petra a couple of days ago on my MacBook Pro. I installed the 64-bit version. This is what gets up when I go to Networking: http://i.imgur.com/6v9CnYt.jpg Just ask if you miss some details or information And YES, the Internet here works perfectly fine. It have worked perfectly fine on my computer until I installed Linux Mint, but on for example my phone it works. And on my dads computer.

Yes, I did indeed do that. And this is what comes up: http://i.imgur.com/6v9CnYt.jpg

What do I do from here?

Please, any help to get? Thanks.

EDIT: Seems like it's this in all. I have tested Linux Mint 16 KDE, Cinnamon and Mate now, and it is like this on all, even in just the DVD's. I can't really connect to the Internet. Doesn't Linux Mint works properly on a Mac or what?

When I go to Driver Manager I get this up: http://i.imgur.com/Ycp8jsd.jpg

"No proprietary drivers are in use."

ok for some reason it dosnt seem to have loaded the drivers, lets try something else

open software manager in search box type broadcom, see if anything is selected if so open them and uninstall..

if you are using mint 16-64 bit select and install bcmwl-kernel-sorce

if you are using mint 16-32bit select and install bcmwl-kernal-sorce-i386

fingers crossed
you will need to be connected by ethernet

Now I have open software manager. Check!
I have nothing to uninstall when I search after broadcom, in the menu nor in the software manager.

Nothing gets up when I search for that. Do I need to be connected to the Internet to get search results up?

I do not have a cable I am afraid. I could get it at my school thought, but I would have been glad to get it faster than two days from now. Have already survived enough days with my phone, which I dont use to anything else than messages and phone ringing ... well, at least till now.

I havent given up on you yet.. ok you cant find the drivers in the software manager, i now think you must be in the states, or have downloaded the non codec package..if so try the following ,,oh as long as you can connect to the internet via your mobile ,thats fine

1. The states? Like USA? Nope. Was born and raised in Norway. I am in Norway. I downloaed the package in Norway. I bought my computer in Norway. And I tryed installing Linux Mint in Norway. It was this package I downloaed: http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=144 (Scroll down to Primary download mirrors "Europe Norway Communica"). Should I try to install another one?

2. No, I am pretty sure I didnt download the non codec package. I downloaded the Linux Mint 16 "Petra" - Cinnamon (64-bit).

Thanks for the link. Was you suggesting me trying it only if I was in the states or have the codecs package, or should I try it anyway?

just that whatever you downloaded it dosnt seem to have the codec for the drivers in it, this is one solution that normally works to install the proprietary drivers...
i'm not a techki but i now how frustrating it can be to get trying to sort the wireless...

good luck

Hey,

Happened upon your post when I was looking for answer to a different issue. I see that you have:

Code: Select all

Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4322 802.lla/b/g/n Wireless LAN
in your list of devices there. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=896713 This might be helpful.

You should post the results of a lsmod, my hunch is that you need to install the bcm43xx kernel module on your machine.

People please help me. Recently I've updated kernel to 3.13.4 and probably after that wi-fi stopped starting at system login. Now I've installed 3.12, deleted all other kernels and reinstalled Broadcom driver, updated GRUB. Still nothing happens. Wi-Fi is off and its indicator is off as well all the time.
My OS is Linux Mint 16 MATE 64 bit.

My 'inxi -N' command result:

Code: Select all

Network: Card-1: Broadcom BCM43228 802.11a/b/g/n
Card-2: Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller driver: r8169
Thanks in advance.

I too had problems with my wireless. I intalled Mint 16 on a MacBook Air and had no wireless. I checked the driver and found it was set at "Do not use this devise". After setting it to use the driver my wireless worked fine.
