[Not Solved] Bluetooth not working on Atheros wireless card

Post by geoff_dean_21 »

I have been using Windows for a long time and I have decided to try something different in Linux. So I bought a new Toshiba Satellite c50-A166. It's the cheapest model and comes with no software, no support from Toshiba and with the slowest CPU. Just right for Linux which is much faster than Windows 7.
I installed Linux Mint 16 and everything worked perfectly except Bluetooth which fails to find any other bluetooth device. The Wi-Fi works perfectly which I think uses the same wireless card as does bluetooth.
I did get it to work in Windows 7 by using the driver "Bluetooth Filter Driver Package" from Atheros.
I submit the result of inxi -Fxz : and mintWifi : commands as instructed.

By the way you give the time as 9:10pm when it's 10.10pm here in Kuwait.
Hoping someone can help me.
Geoff

I tried KDE with the same result, at least from booting from a USB stick.

Qualcomm Atheros QCA9565 / AR9565 Wireless Network Adapter driver: ath9k bus-ID: 02:00.0
(Wireless card gives WIFI and Bluetooth support)

It works in Windows 7. But there are two drivers, one for WIFI and one for Bluetooth. Without the Bluetooth driver I get the same result as in linux.
I have this bluetooth driver package which has support for XP,windows 7 & 8, all both 32 bit and 64 bit.

Why would linux mint have only one of the drivers installed when the card needs two drivers?

Is it possible to use this package on linux?

These are the details of the Bluetooth driver as available from Toshiba.
The detail says Windows 7 - 64 Bit, but if you look inside the installation package you can see XP, Vista, Win 7 & Win 8 files 32 & 64 bits.

We don't seem to be getting any other responses. Do you have this card in your PC?

No.
I have a Broadcom wireless card.

Can go days looking for the answer, I know this is very boring ...

LM16 has many bugs, why don't you try LM14 (or LM13), is more user-friendly, and recognizes the hardware, better.

Cinnamon is different from Mate and KDE; Sometimes one works better than the other.

Or try Linux MInt Debian.

Re: Bluetooth not working on Atheros wireless card

Post by geoff_dean_21 »

I examined the windows 7 bluetooth driver and noted the name of the inf file was netathrx.inf.
This was the same name as the WIFI driver for the card.
There was no node on the device manager that represented the bluetooth driver, just the wifi driver for the card.
I could disable wifi by uninstalling that node, but the bluetooth still worked. The bluetooth didn't work until I installed the bluetooth driver then I couldn't stop it working by uninstalling any driver from Device Manager.
I finally got bluetooth to work in linux by copying the sys and inf files ( netathrx.inf and athrx.sys ) from the Windows 7 DriverStore to the Linux root directory.
I then merely used ndiswrapper -i netathrx.inf and bluetooth immediately started to work.

I would like some explanation on what is the name of a driver! Is it the package name, the inf file name, the sys file name, or some other name?
To search for a driver as for any apllication requires a name!

I'm not sure what setup you have but I assume you have a laptop (possibly Samsung) with windows 7 preinstalled and your wifi and bluetooth working with windows 7. Then you try to install mint 16 and find the bluetooth not working.

I recently purchased a Toshiba Satellite c50-a166, (it comes with no software installed) in order to run Linux.
It is totally unsupported by Toshiba.
First I installed Windows 7 using a SP1 version a few years old.
When installed most of the hardware didn't work.
I used the site http://www.toshibamea.com/en/Download-Files to download the missing drivers, specifying win 7 64 bit drivers for satellite c50-A.
You should see 64 drivers selected, the atheros wireless lan ,and bluetooth filter drivers (both 16/09/2013) are the relevant ones.
The "ATHR_DEV_OS61_SAMSUNG956x.ndi" line is definately not in these netathrx.inf files.

I am getting errors now lin the package handler and updater. E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
So I think the ndiswrapper missed a header when it stored the driver as a package.

hi geoff,
i have a pack-bell easynote te69kb. windows 8 was installed but managed to wipe it from disk with the install of linux mint !

the pack-bell webpage gave this driver - but can't get it to work with ndiswrapper at all. will try to buy a usb bluetooth that claims to work with linux. maybe that will work.

Hi Billy

I've heard that it's harder to dual boot with windows 8.
I have been been giving everybody the wrong story. I now find that the driver and ndiswrapper is irrelevant.
When I dual boot Windows 7 bluetooth's fine. When I then restart and boot linux the bluetooth worrks just fine.
When I boot windows 7 and then shutdown then boot linux the bluetooth does't work.
From this I deduce the bluetooth card is not enabled properly by linux.

I read somewhere that sometimes windows will load some firmware into the bluetooth device to get it to work and restarting with Linux it will also work but it'll stop working after a cold boot because the firmware gets dumped. Do I need to find a firmware for this hardware?

I have older Emachine e528 with bluetooth working under windows 7 but not even recognized hardware with mint 16 xfce, driver for windows called Bluetooth_Atheros_6.17.0415.0302_W7x64_A but mint doesnt see hardwaree and bluetooth button on pannel of laptop is not active. Tried all I could think of but didnt get it to work yet.

pressing bluetooth button causes respond in dmesg:

after

Code: Select all

sudo ndiswrapper -i atheros_bth.inf
respond on

Code: Select all

sudo ndiswrapper -l
is:

After reboot dmesg gives following:
