[NVIDIA GTX 850M] prime is not supported by your hardware.

Post by Joriktos »

Hi LM-forum,

firstly I want to say thank you to all people which are helping improving LM and making it to my preferred system. Today it's a system which is superior to each system I've ever had in my opinion (except the software compatibility, but that wasn't a problem for me until now, thanks to Wine or in the worst case VirtualBox I can run every program, so it's the only system that I'm installing on all of my computers). Also friends of me are surprised that Linux (Mint) definitely can now compete with Windows and OS X (and for me Linux was always the better system :) ).

Now to my problem:
I did a fresh install of LM 17.2 Cinnamon 64-bit. Before I was running LM 17 Cinnamon 64-bit and I didn't use the upgrade because I want to completely install everything new because of programs that I'm not using anymore - and because I was running bumblebee and thought I don't need it anymore because LM 17.2 will support the Optimus technology.
Unfortunately there was no trayicon after install, so I added it manually, but it is a grey speechbubble with a grey X in it with a tooltip saying "NVIDIA prime is not supported by your hardware.".
But my laptop has built in a NVIDIA GTX 850M which worked without any problems with bumblebee on my old system.

I tried all different drivers which are listed in the driver-manager (xserver-xorg-video-nouveau, nvidia-340 + nvidia-340-updates and nvidia-346 + nvidia346-updates), but nothing happened. The NVIDIA-prime-applet still says hardware not supported and the output of inxi -Fxz is also the same at this line:
"X.Org: 1.15.1 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev,vesa) FAILED: nouveau Resolution: 1920x1080@60.0hz, 1920x1080@60.0hz"

I have no switch in the BIOS or anywhere else as far as I know and as already said it was working without any problems on LM 17 with bumblebee.
I hope somone can help me. If you need more information, just ask.

Thanks for helping.

I'm now using bumblebee again.

I did this steps to install:

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mamarley/nvidia -y
sudo apt-get update -y
apt-get install nvidia-352 -y
apt-get install bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia primus linux-headers-generic -y
Now edit the file /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf and change this 3 lines:

Code: Select all

// search for "Driver="
Driver=nvidia

// search for "LibraryPath="
LibraryPath=/usr/lib/nvidia-352:/usr/lib32/nvidia-352

// search for "XorgModulePath="
XorgModulePath=/usr/lib/nvidia-352,/usr/lib/xorg/modules
now do a restart and bumblebee should be working. You can test it with

Code: Select all

optirun glxgears

Hi,

Optimus support was actually written on a laptop with an NVIDIA GTX 850M :)

You don't need to modify anything. Post-install you should not see the prime applet in the systray, it should appear on the next reboot AFTER you install the nvidia drivers via the Driver Manager.

Make sure you do the following:

- Check that the nvidia drivers are installed (in your case that's fine I think)
- Check that the nvidia-settings are installed (the applet won't start without that)
- Reboot (or simply logout if drivers were already installed)

You should also be able to test prime support yourself with the command:

Code: Select all

prime-supported
This should return "yes".

Wow clem, thank you very much for answering.

After i tried to run "sudo prime-supported" i got no return and I found this at /var/log/prime-supported.log:

Code: Select all

No offloading required. Abort
I'm not very sure, but i think I did this steps (installed drivers and nvidia-settings) and then the tooltip of the applet still said "NVIDIA prime is not supported by your hardware."

Edit: And my nvidia-settings shows up like in the pictures, i think it doesn't recognize my NVIDIA card:

nvidia-settings2.png

Can you go try with nvidia 346.72-0ubuntu1?

Okay, I selected nvidia 346.72-0ubuntu1 in the Driver Manager, did a reboot and it's still selected, but it's the same problem as before.

It looks like there's an issue with the driver/gpu. In any case, it's not an issue with the applet itself.

I'd recommend cleaning up all that (i.e. removing all PPAs, purging all foreign packages using mintsources etc..), or if it's an option, a fresh install.

Check your BIOS settings also and your xorg.conf if any. It's possible some setting is telling the card not to activate.

I don't have many foreign packages that could make problems with that, i think (because after the fresh install it also didn't work).

In the BIOS there settings is no switch for my graphics card. But as I looked for my /etc/X11/xorg.conf, there was no such file, so maybe there is no setting that tells it should activate my card? Or is this a deeper problem?

Hi,

I don't know it this is related, but I'll say it just in case..

In Mint 18.1, after you install the NVIDIA drivers, you need to reboot for them to load.

On your first login, they'll fail to work.

At that stage, you need to log out and log back in. The logout process actually offloads the drivers and PRIME is able to work then.

You only need to do this one.

I know there are other issues with NVIDIA recently, so just keep this one in mind when testing.
