Mint 13 - Mouse and system unresponsive - events dropped in

Post by tolpuddle »

Hi

Very much a newbie to posting questions (this is my first one) so this is a big hello to anyone reading this. I've been a very enthusiastic linux user for over 7 years getting the best out of older PCs and laptops and have used Mandriva, Ubuntu and quite a few different distributions/desktops. I've always had a preference for Linux Mint and even though Cinnamon brought a few problems with screen freezes for some users (me included) i stuck with it and it works beautifully on my trusty HP DC7700 desktop.

So, in 7 years, I've not come across anything that stumped me completely - until now. Two years ago (for my birthday!) i got a brand new Compaq CQ56 laptop. Not a high end specification but once I wiped Windows 7 completely after 2 days it was a much better machine. I tried a number of distributions including Mint but came across he same problem with quite a few of them - for no clear reason the system would begin to slow and unresponsive. The first indication was always with the mouse. This might take a few minutes or take 30 minutes but it would invariably happen.

Now, because the arrival of the laptop coincided with a a holiday I loaded Ubuntu 10.04 which I had already established worked out of the box (webcam, audio, wireless, synaptics touchpad) and did not have that problem. And there it has sat merrily working away for almost two years.

But, I did want to get the same distribution on both desktop and laptop. Now that Cinnamon was fixed, I decided to replace Ubuntu on the laptop. But before I did, created an up to date version on Mint 13 Cinnamon using Remastersys and Unetbootin. Worked fine on the laptop. Then I got a fresh download of Mint 13 Cinnamon and ran orkthis through Virtualbox to check everythin. Seemed to work fine in Virtualbox. Then I loaded Mint 13 Cinnamon alongisde Ubuntu so I could dual boot. Seemed to work fine. Stressed it a bit by by playing Videos and MP3s simultaneously while editing documents and images using Libreoffice and Gimp. Seems fine.

So, I took the plunge, wiped the hard disk completely and started with a clean install of Mint 13 Cinnamon. and after a few hours the problem I got a 2 years ago reappeared. I cannot find out what is wrong and have read stuff about problems with mice and touchpads till I fall asleep. Nothing seems to help.

I have though atached a copy of the xorg log which seems to suggest (to my not very technical eye) that something is going wrong - you have to scroll to the end where it says events are being dropped.

I've also attached outputs from inxi and lspci. If anything else would help let me know (might need to bit of help if it gets complicated on the command line!)

Cheers and thanks for any help given.

Re: Mint 13 - Mouse and system unresponsive - events dropped

Post by tolpuddle »

Well..........I could not get LM13 without a problem cropping up in Xorg. So the laptop has been rebuilt to Ubuntu 10.04. Interestingly, i tried another few live distributions out including Solus, Ubuntu 12.04 and Manjaro (Arch based). All of them seem to present the same problem. Perversely, the newer the distro the greater the chance of a problem suggesting its either a newer driver or kernel causing the problem. If anyone does have a suggestion...................really appreciated!
