no sound on Linux Mint 17

Post by archp2008 »

Hello everyone.

I have Windows and Linux installed in a multiboot setup on my HTPC with my audio box connected by spdif/out audio cables. I get sound fine on Windows but not on LInux. Can anyone please help me get the sound working. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Please generate an overview of your system like this:
- launch a terminal window and make it fullscreen, to avoid chopped lines;
- copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter)

Press Enter.

Copy/paste the output in your next message.

Although it has audio capability, the audio is not connected from the AMD 5770 video card. The spdif out is on the motherboard and this goes to the AVR. There is no HDMI connection to the audio amplifier either, only component video and optical audio. The video card connects directly to the tv screen via the dvi outputs. There is no deskport connection either. I have tried changing all the audio settings to no avail.

I got a virus on my Windows computer and converted it to Linux Mint. I had the same problem and numerous searches and potential fixes didn't seem to remedy.

Windows 8 worked perfectly with sound but as soon as I installed Linux Mint, it didn't. I have a workaround that helps. I plugged the 3.5mm jack from my speakers into the front of the PC and it worked. I just need to figure out the back.

Methinks it may be a driver issues. I can't remember what motherboard I built this PC with so I'll have to do some digging to be helpful. Any information you want from me?

I notice a ton of other users have reported problems with this Realtek ALC889A audio chip in various versions of Linux.

A kernel update often resolves driver issues.... So try this: install the latest kernel from the 3.13 series:
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... el-updates
(item 3, right column)

Then reboot.

When no improvement: install the latest kernel from the 3.16 series. Then reboot.

When still no improvement: check for a newer BIOS / UEFI and when available, install it.

Thanks again for this. The only time I have updated linux kernels before is as part of a normal update or upgrade inside the update manager. Do I simply click on the button that says "install kernel 3.13.0.39" on that page. I don't see anything regarding the 3.16 series. The BIOS is the same as came with the version 1.0 mobo. I have not updated the BIOS before and have to read up on it. I am suffering with a bad dose of the flu at the moment - human type of virus.

In update manager: W: Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/ ... _amd64.deb

Other kernels installed successfully but still no sound. Some mention of "Missing firmware" during details for installations.

e.g.

By messing around with the settings in audio I got sound for playing video files on the hard drive but still nothing for youtube.
Has anyone ever got the ALC889A built in audio board to work "out of the box" in any other version of Linux? The easiest thing to do would be to install a different distribution or release in place of the Linux MInt 17. I am having the same issue with Xubuntu 14.10 on the same computer. On a different computer I have installed upwards of 30 different distros over the past 5 or 6 years without having the problem of no sound ever before.

Turns out the only thing I had to do was to select which sound device I wanted to use and whether I wanted to use analog or digital outputs. The complexity arose in my case because my pc had two possible sound sources - the one built into the pci video card and the one built in to the motherboard. Only the latter was connected to my AVR.
