Digital Optical Output to Receiver. 5.1 not working.

Hello everyone,

I'm new to the forum. I'm running a week old install of mint 17 and like everything about it...except my sound.

I am having trouble getting alsamixer and pulse audio to recognize my receiver with 5.1 surround. I only get stereo digitally via the receiver. I tried seeing if alsamixer had anything muted and it does not. One peculiar thing is that both of my s/pdifs are 00 in alsamixer. Also my PCM does not have a lower limit. That is there is no 00 option. I'm not sure if that is normal. I tried installing pulse and it does not see 5.1 surround either. Does anyone have any advice?

Hi,

it's no going to be easy because the kernel doesn't have the correct driver for it.
Take a look at this tutorial and see if you feel comfortable doing this. (with our help off course)

I newer kernel may actually fix the problem also.
However I strongly recommend you have a backup before doing anything alike.

I have a fresh install of mint with nothing really on it. I just reinstalled mint a few hours ago. So I updated the kernel to 3.13.0-34-generic x86_64 (64 bit, gcc: 4.8.2) . Still no luck. Btw is there a way to check if my kernel is stable with my system? I don't want it crashing on me one day when it really matters. Also, what do you suggest I do about the sound? Same thread as before?

any update can break something, that's just the way it is.
the kernel also brings new drivers (witch seem to be necessary for your card) and fixes other bugs in drivers.
If you install the kernel correctly you always have the option to boot back to the old kernel (grub will have an entry for the old kernel).
I find it easier to upgrade kernel then to add extra lines in config files to get stuff working (most of the time the extra settings disable features to get something working, only a new kernel adds real features)
Kernel 3.15 would be my first try, it is at revision 3.15.10 so it had a couple of revision and fixes already. £.16 is for me a bit too new so I will wait a couple of weeks before I switch full time to it (I have it installed and switch from time to time to it)
As you already said it's a fresh install so trying a new kernel is not too much of a hassle and any other things you install will see the new kernel and install accordingly.

I always use this method to install it and never had a real problem (could always go back to the old one if something didn't work) only thing to be careful with is if you have proprietary drivers installed.

So far so good on the linux kernel I updated to.

I tried the steps on creating realtek drivers and get stuck at step 8. I'm logged in as root and have the alsa driver open.
Here is the error.
./configure--with-cards=hda-intel

How do I proceed?


1. Visit "http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dow ... Down=false" and download the lastest Unix/Linux driver. In this example,

2. Open terminal.

3. Type: "sudo su" and enter root password.

4. Change to the folder where you downloaded the driver (ie: "cd ~/Downloads")

4. Type: "tar -xjf LinuxPkg_XXX.tar.bz2" , where XXX is the version of your downloaded driver (as sown in filename, example: "tar -xjf LinuxPkg_5.17rc13.tar.bz2").

5. Type: "cd realtek-linux-audiopack-YYY" , where YYY is the version of your downloaded driver (as shown if folder name, example: "cd realtek-linux-audiopack-5.17").

6. Type "tar -xjf alsa-driver-ZZZ.tar.bz2" , where ZZZ is the version corresponding to the filename (example: "tar -xjf alsa-driver-1.0.25-5.17rc13.tar.bz2").

7. Type "cd alsa-driver-WWW" , where WWW is the version corresponding to the folder name (example: "cd alsa-driver-1.0.25").

8. Type "./configure --with-cards=hda-intel"

9. Type "make"

10. Type "make install"

11. Reboot

12. Test the audio output. You can do this by right-clicking on you speaker icon and selecting sound preferences -> hardware -> select the desired audio output -> select the desired surround profile (ie: Analog Surround 5.1 Output + Analog Stereo Input) -> Test Speakers. During the installation the sound level can be mutted, check out in the slider if it is not mute!

to what kernel did you upgrade to?
also the realtek drivers only support
Vanilla 3.0 to 3.2
- Vanilla 2.6.18 to 2.6.39
from memory (on another card installing drivers) I had to use configure--with-cards=hda_intel (not hda-intel)

kernel 3,15 should have the driver included (if you modified some of your configuration files you need to undo this before installing the new linux kernel or it may not recognize the card correctly)

3.16 is still a bit new (it's like I won't use windows before at least a service pack one :lol: )

try the 3.15.10 it should have the driver in it. can't check it as I don't have your hw)

Now I have 3.15.10. Here is my error I get on step 8.

I checked my gcc version and it is there. Is there a permissions issue? Below is the output of the gcc.

before we go on did you actually check the sound settings now, to my knowledge the driver should be in 3.15.... (also it may have been disabled again because of problems between a version 3.15.a to a version 3.15.b)

everything looks alright at least from the OS side.
However the way the info is transmitted over the optical link is way to difficult for me to troubleshoot without a captcha optical device so I'm out of ideas.

Alright, thank you. The options for my sound come up as follows: Built in audio digital stereo (IEC 958) and an HDMI option. I am of course using the first option. I'm not sure if there should be another option I would have to select or if the first should have digital 5.1 is alsa or pulse. Just mentioning that in case that helps. In any case upgrading my kernel allowed the canned mint drivers to work on my graphics card so I don't need the proprietary ones. Thank you for that. Thank you for helping as much as you could also.

Does anyone else want to take a stab at this?

How would I get that? It doesn't really tell me much in update drivers for windows.

Also, it looks like my C compiler does not work. I'm not sure how to get it going. It looks like there are directories missing in bin/ld among other things. ***Note that I went back to the default kernel** I was having this same issue with 3.15.10 anyway.
