Hello, fatman2021b.
fatman2021b wrote:Remastersys generates empty dvd images..... :=(
Only a few weeks ago, before finally ditching my Linux Mint 14 32-bit installation, I successfully created a bootable systembackup ISO image with the help of Remastersys 3.0.4-2, the last Remastersys version which has ever been released. - Therefore your general statement cannot be confirmed.

A general note on Remastersys
The development of Remastersys has been stopped by the creator of Remastersys: Remastersys
(Actually he did so more than once. But the final "this is the end" was announced in 2012, roundabout at the same time when Ubuntu 12.04 and Mint 13 were initially released.)

A general note on the Remastersys fork Black Lab Image Creator
The Remastersys fork Black Lab Image Creator is no longer available to the public for free. Blacklab Image Creator

Unless you can bothered to let us know the relevant details:
  • Which version of Linux Mint exactly do you use?
  • 32-bit or 64-bit?
  • Which version of Remastersys exactly did you use?
  • Which options inside Remastersys did you configure?
  • Which kind of Remastersys operation did you execute?
  • Which error messages if any did Remastersys display? - Post the Remastersys logfile.
Unless you can be bothered to provide relevant details we can close this thread.

Kind regards,
Karl

Reason: corrected the Remastersys version number from 3.4.2 to 3.0.4-2, sorry, my carelessness

Re: Remastersys is broken

Post by karlchen »

Hello, fatman2021b.

You state you are using Mint 17. Yet, the Remastersys logfile lists this as the content of /etc/lsb-release:

Code: Select all

DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=14.10
DISTRIB_CODENAME=utopic
Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic is newer than Mint 17 Qiana (Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty). And it is in its early develoment state right now. So it may be buggy still.
I cannot tell whether this is the reason why Remastersys fails. It may be.
It is also imaginable that Remastersys will fail on genuine Mint 17, too. I cannot tell, because I have not tried it on Mint 17, yet.

The steps where Remastersys seems to fail seems to be this one:

Code: Select all

genisoimage: Uh oh, I cant find the boot image 'isolinux/isolinux.bin' !
This is pretty near the end.
So Remastersys needs isolinux for the bootable image. It looks for it on the installed operating system. But it is not there. Usually Remastersys (temporarily) installs all components which it needs and uninstalls them again once it has finished. Might be Remastersys was not able to install isolinux before starting its main job. Maybe installing isolinux beforehand and starting all over with Remastersys will solve the issue.

Yet, keep in mind the last Remastersys version, 3.0.4-2, which you are using, was not created for Ubuntu 14.10, but for Ubuntu 12.10. So it may still be compatible or it may not. As the author has abandoned the development and as the developer whom he gave Remastersys to has withdrawn Remastersys and its fork Blacklab Image Creator from the public, there is really no-one you could send a bug report to.

Kind regards,
Karl

I have the source code for both Remastersys and Blacklab Image Creator if anyone would like a copy.

Keep in mind if your backup exceeds the capacity of your DVD all you're making then is a coaster. Try Distribution to verify your install is working properly.

Hi, folks.

This post is being written on my Acer Aspire One D260 netbook. It has been booted from a Linux Mint 16 32-bit system backup ISO image. This system backup has been created with the help of Remastersys 3.0.4-2 only this afternoon. Next it has been transferred to a bootable USB pendrive.
Here is my inxi system overview:

OK. Next thing will be posting the Remastersys logfile created during the system backup.
Goal:
Giving a hint that Remastersys may still be able to create usable system backups. At least on systems that do not use EFI boot.

Cheers,
Karl

Re: Remastersys is broken

Post by karlchen »

Hi, folks.

OK, so here I'm back on my Zotac machine where Linux Mint 16 32-bit xfce has been backed up with the help of Remastersys 3.0.4-2. - This will be the last
post sent from this Mint 16 installation, because it is going to be removed from the disk now that a bootable Remastersys backup has been created successfully. - After all as a moderator I am not expected to ignore this announcement: Still using Linux Mint 14, 15, or 16? Upgrade to 17 asap!, am I.

Summary/Conclusion:
Even on (almost) recent Linux Mint editions Remastersys 3.0.4-2 can be used to create bootable system backups successfully.
So Remastersys is not simply broken as such.
Maybe the difference between success and defeat is: MBR vs EFI boot.

Nonetheless, keep in mind what eanfrid rightly said at the beginning of this thread: Remastersys is dead meat, the developmend has been stopped.

Cheers,
Karl

Hello, Dyfi.

This is right and wrong at the same time.
As we learn from the Refracta Release Notes:
Refracta 7 (Wheezy) release notes
This is Refracta-7.00. It is based on Debian 7 (Wheezy) and uses Debian repositories for packages.
As a consequence Refracta Tools will be compatible with Debian Wheezy, maybe with Debian and LMDE.
Yet, it is an open question whether Refracta Tools can be used on the Ubuntu based Linux Mint editions like Linux Mint 17, too.
But thank you very much for promoting a competitor of LMDE in the Linux Mint forums nonetheless.

Kind regards,
Karl

Here's another viable alternative to Remastersys: Systemback

Ubuntu forums discussion here. This was how I found out about it while looking for a replacement for Remastersys.

Although I'm not using Mint 17, I tested it myself about a week ago on an Ubuntu 14.04 install, and it seems to work nicely. Mint 17 is based off Ubuntu 14.04 anyway, so there shouldn't be any problems.

I find the Systemback UI a tad quirky though. I just hope the developer improves it and makes it less ambiguous.

Good luck!

Hello, Pilosopong Tasyo.

Thank you very much for pointing to an alternative product which may be able to replace Remastersys.
The nice thing about Remastersys was/is that the source code of the main programme is available and easily understood. After all it is a bash shell script.
Basically it is only Tony's source code of the latest Remastersys GUI which is no longer available. Yet, as there is still an alternative GUI, written in Python, source code availability is not a real problem, either.
Maintaining Remastersys should not be an unsolvable challenge.
Therefore I had been wondering a bit why no-one seemed to be making any serious attempt of creating a Remastersys fork. Maybe I can stop wondering now.

Kind regards,
Karl

Refracta Tools will install and work in mint16 out of the box, 17 needs live-config-upstart.deb as a dependency.

Just a note: Mint 16 is dead meat just like genuine Remastersys.
And the thread starter, fatman2021b, either uses Mint 17, or as his Remastersys logfile seems to suggest, Ubuntu 14.10.

If you do fork Remastersys, then you should also add support for Red Hat/Fedora and Arch/Manjaro Linux.

Personal point of view:
If I were the one to fork Remastersys I would limit my support to Ubuntu / Linux Mint only.
Reason:
Pretty trivial. I do not use RedHat, Fedora, Arch or Manjaro. So I would not be able to reproduce problem reports affecting these platforms and I would not be able to test on these platforms.
As long as such a fork is created as a one-man-show, supporting any Linux platform may not be feasible.

Hi, fatman2021b.

As you stated in your initial post
Remastersys generates empty dvd images..... :=(
the interesting thing to learn would be whether you have by now succeeded in creating a non-empty dvd image with the help of Remastersys. - Mine was 2.4 GB in size, not really empty. And the pendrive holding the ISO image booted up fine.

Kind regards,
Karl
