VLC 2.1.4 opens two windows

VLC video player suddenly started opening two windows when I click a saved video file.

I had this problem before, and I made it go away somehow, but I forget how. Now it has come back, and I don't know how to bring back the single window. I have gone through the preference/settings menu but can't find anything.

It just went away again, I don't know how. In the advanced settings, I selected ffmpeg codec, then restarted VLC. Still two windows. Then in settings I clicked the Reset Preferences, and again restarted VLC. Now I have one window.

I had done the "reset preferences" routine several times before, with no result. So changing the code had some effect???

Perhaps this result may help someone else, so I report it here.

And it might not work next time.

Two windows for one instance of vlc, or two instances of vlc?

If the other window is the playlist, then vlc->view --> Playlist and/or Docked Playlist.

Big window = menu, control etc., with video filename on title bar. Small window is minimal, and shows the video. I can close the small window, but the sound continues. If instead I close the big window, then both windows disappear.

You might look at vlc->tools->prefs->interface (and maybe "advanced"), and "Reset preferences".

When that doesn't work, try deleting directories:
~/.local/share/vlc
~/.config/vlc

Or maybe just:
~/.config/vlc/vlc-qt-interface.conf

("~" = home)
