Synaptic will not run

I have a laptop Latidude D630 (Intel Core 2 Duo) with Mint 17 64
I can start Synaptic but it crashes with the following:
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_trusty-updates_restricted_i18n_Translation-en
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
the Software Manager will not start, nor can I run the software updater.

Open the Software Sources -
Menu > Administration > Software Sources > Maintenance > Fix Mergelist
