Firefox Sync not working on Linux Mint 17.2 Rafaela 64 bit

Post by brancalessio »

Hello!

I installed Linux Mint 17.2 Rafaela 64 bit few days ago and I have a problem with Firefox Sync. I just had to reinstall everything on my computer, so everything comes from a fresh install (both Linux and Windows).

I just want to sync my bookmarks.

I set Firefox Sync up with my user name and password (which are recognized), it says that the synchronization will start briefly, but it actually never starts (also after 30 minutes).

I read in some forum that this maybe due to the high number of bookmarks (I have around 2600 now...) and someone suggests to erase my Firefox Account and open it again. Nevertheless I did not try this solution, since Firefox on Windows 8.1 seems instead working.

Firefox on another installation (under Ubuntu 14.04 LTS) seems working, too. I also disconnected it and reconnected it.

I tried the following. A fresh Firefox profile (without Linux Mint customizations), but it does not work, too.

Since my home is encrypted with ecryptfs, I also tried to do the same experiment as a different user, but with a not encrypted home folder. It does not work.

I also changed my Firefox Account password to see if this was the problem, but the problem remained.

What do you suggest? Waiting for the next release of Firefox for Linux Mint, that may fix the issue, or erase and reopen my Firefox Account? Other suggestions?

Thank you for your answers!

Hi brancalessio,

I'm not sure why this would be happening to your FireFox now. I don't know If Firefox has a limit to how many bookmarks it can handle, although you can search for that.

But, I can highly recommend a FireFox add-on called "xmarks", which can handle synchronizing your bookmarks and works really well. I too have a lot of bookmarks, and "Xmarks" handles it no problem. There is also another FireFox add-on called "Febe" which is great at backing up all your FireFox stuff to a folder on your system, which I then copy to an external USB flash drive and my external USB backup drive, just in case.

Note: if you have thousands of boomarks, the first time you run 'Xmarks", it will take a little time, but not afterwards ...

Hope this helps ...

Thanks for your answer!

In the mean time I made some tests and the problem is solved (so it seems). How? I don't know... It actually works with my original account on Mint.

I made several trials with several configurations. Created a new user with a clear new account on Mint, created also a totally new firefox account (with a another email address). Created also a new Firefox profile. Used the downloaded the official Firefox build (not the Mint one). It didn't work.

Yesterday I also reinstalled all the packages that contained the word "firefox" in it (among them firefox, language packs, and mint addon). It seems it was not the solution.

I also restarted Firefox disabling all addons. Again it seems it was not the solution.

A couple of info more. Every test was done with my home wifi (which in general works properly). The difference is that today I'm in a different wifi network and I tried to sync while another already synced browser (on another computer) was open.

Here is some more or less typical error logs I got running Firefox from command line (when it was not working):

It seems that the combination Mint + (my home network) does not work, while Windows + (my home networks) seems working. In another network, everything seems working fine.

Firefox synchronization encounters several errors in authentication. Funny enough, also I could not authenticate in Firefox Hello in my home wifi, but I could in the other network!

I have a simulare problem. I can log in to my sync account and it syncs my bookmarks and extensions and such.. works fine. But when I restart firefox it claims that I have enterd the wrong password or e-mail and sync is disconnected. I have to login manually every time. Any suggestions?

For completeness I post a workaround that works for me.

I manually modified the MTU to 1250 (the default value is 1500) with

sudo ifconfig eth0 mtu 1250
sudo ifconfig wlan0 mtu 1250

This seems to be a workaround, but I cannot explain why Firefox on Windows 10 has not the same issue (and the default value for MTU is 1500 in Windows 10 too).

I must say that my ISP is Unitymedia (only ipv6, which seems to make some web sites unreachable) and I am not the only one to have issues:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1059072

I must also say that on a previous installation of Ubuntu 12.04 such a issue was not present, but I cannot say why.
