Brian49,
Here is the contents of my /etc/apt/sources.list when I tried the update to Thunar 1.4.0 ......

Code: Select all

deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia testing main non-free

# deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian sid main
# deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian sid main

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
# deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian experimental main contrib non-free
I get this error to start with......

Ah, but your statement about tracking SID was my clue......
and I normally track Debian Unstable (SID)
So, I enabled the SID Repo's.........and I got Thunar 1.4.0 Installed.

Code: Select all

#deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
#deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
#deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia testing main non-free

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian sid main
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian sid main

#deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian experimental main contrib non-free

I have noticed that my Font Colors in Gedit are white on a white background, making it impossible to read the text.
And now that I have re-booted my lower Panel is all shifted to the left, with no way to get it back to what it was before
the change in Thunar. So, I'm not so sure that was a wise move on my part to update Thunar. I wouldn't recommend it.

Now, I'm debating on trying to undo what was done or just re-install. Something I really didn't want to do.

I ended up re-installing LMDE to get this mess cleared up.

Thanks.

Larry

Sorry to hear about the glitches. I guess they have something to do with having the Mint Latest repository enabled at the same time as SID and Experimental, which certainly isn't recommended.

Gedit is GTK+3 application, and most probably this is what happened when you've enabled both Sid and Experimental (OMG ) and updated your system.

Long story short: GTK+3 themes compatible with 3.2 are not necessarily compatible with 3.4. Some patching is needed. As for the Mint-X theme, it's probably easier just to get the version made for Mint 13, it's compatible with 3.4.

Brian49 wrote:As far as I can see, that tutorial explains how to do a general system upgrade. We want to upgrade only Xfce-related packages.

(1) First, back up your system, so that you can restore it if things go badly wrong. There is advice in these forums on various ways to do that.

(2) To enable the Experimental repository, edit the file /etc/apt/sources.list as root, and add this line:

Code: Select all

deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian experimental main contrib non-free
(3) Start the Synaptic package manager and click on the Reload button at the top left.

(4) Select the Status view from the options at the bottom left.

(5) In the Status list in the left-hand pane, click on the line "Installed (upgradable)". The list of upgradable packages should include the ones for Xfce 4.10.

(6) Mark only these packages for upgrade (right-click on a package to bring up a context menu):

- all packages with names beginning "xf" or "libxf"
- all packages with names containing "thunar"
- all packages with names containing "exo"
- all packages with names beginining "libgarcon" (if you have that installed).

(7) Use the search function (Ctrl+F) to find these two packages, and mark them for installation (right-click again):
ibxfce4ui-utils
xfce4-appfinder

(8) Apply the changes, and close Synaptic.

(9) Go back to the file /etc/apt/sources.list and delete the entry for the Experimental repository.
Thanks, worked a treat.

That's good to hear! A number of other users still seem to be having problems upgrading to Xfce 4.10. The main issue appears to be with panel plugins, most of which haven't yet been updated by their respective developers. That doesn't affect me as I hardly use any of those plugins.
