Cinnamon Not Working - No Panels
I just did a clean install of Mint 12, did all the updates, installed Cinnamon 1.2 from the repository, and I get nothing, just the default wallpaper image. There are no panels or menus. The only thing that works is Ctrl-Alt-Del which allows me to log out, but nothing else. Additionally, the default GNOME desktop does not work correctly - the menu icons are missing and the text in the panels and menus is very strange, as in every other letter is missing? The GNOME Classic and MATE desktops work just fine. I'd really like to try the Cinnamon desktop if anyone can offer any assistance.

Had previously been running Mint 10 on this same machine with no issues.

Re: Cinnamon Not Working - No Panels
I updated to cinnamon 1.2 and it worked for a while but when I was changing the clock parameters it crashed and I lost my panel. I've uninstalled and tried reinstalling but I can't get a panel now.
Re: Cinnamon Not Working - No Panels
82865G is intel Graphic and you say nVidia AGP 64 MB ( maybe geforce 2/4 MX ), gnome shell had problem run on older graphic card , something like drivers compatibility problem .matarbell wrote:nVidia AGP 82865G Graphics - 64 MB
I have geforce FX5500 with problems :
- if i use nouveau driver , the text font is black
- if i use proprietary driver, the panel is missing
But gnome classic and MATE works fine. I hope this problem will be solved in future, Nvidia older from 6XXX is not supported by Nvidia anymore ( you can check Nvidia 290.10 supported graphic driver ). Maybe Nouveau developer can fix this problem
Re: Cinnamon Not Working - No Panels
Thanks for the reply, mank_in. My computer does have integrated Intel grahics and an added nVidia card, so that's probably why I have the numbers mixed up. I was just reporting what was listed by the System Monitor app. The Intel grahics didn't work correctly under LM10, which is why I added the nVidia card, then all was well under LM10. I really appreciate your insight though. Thanks again.
Re: Cinnamon Not Working - No Panels
Also, no panel here. When I log into Cinnamon I get the desktop icons & wallpaper and that's it. Have to use Ctrl-Alt-Del to log out. Can't do anything at all in Cinnamon. Running Toshiba laptop, AMD processor, ATI M860G [Mobility Radeon 4100] graphics. Proprietary drivers (fglrx) are NOT installed (they turn the screen into gibberish).

Re: Cinnamon Not Working - No Panels
I deleted all the hidden files on my home directory and got my panel back. I don't know which one caused my problem but it was better than reinstalling mint 12.
Re: Cinnamon Not Working - No Panels
i am not sure i want to delete all hidden files. that will mean i will loose other application settings also.
Is there any other solution?

Re: Cinnamon Not Working - No Panels
I have the exact same problem and started a new thread so as not to hijack this one. Does MATE work o.k. for you? Mate works fine for me, and so does Gnome2 and Cairo. Gnome 3--nope. Killing ALL my configuration is NOT a valid option.

@archiegoodwin, maybe you can check : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver

@ mank_in
I checked out the page you mentioned. I had previously "uninstalled" the fglrx drivers. Following the instructions on the link I purged what was left of them. The "lspci -nn | grep VGA" command in the terminal says that I am currently using a "Mobility Radeon 4100" driver, and the "dmesg | grep drm" command says that KMS (Kernel Mode Setting) is up and running.
However, still no luck with Cinnamon. No panel and no left hand corner hot spot. Everything works smoothly in Gnome 3 shell, with no video or display problems now that fglrx has been removed.

@archiegoodwin
maybe you can check the output of :
maybe the GLX renderer is N/A or software rasterizer .
maybe you can check the output of :
Code: Select all

Re: Cinnamon Not Working - No Panels
@ mank_in
This is what I get.
$ inxi -Gx
Graphics: Card: ATI M860G [Mobility Radeon 4100] bus-ID: 01:05.0
X.Org 1.10.4 drivers ati,radeon unloaded: vesa,fbdev Resolution 1366x768@60.0hz
GLX Renderer Gallium 0.4 on AMD RS880 GLX Version 2.1 Mesa 7.11 Direct Rendering Yes
I'm really not savvy enough to know what all that means, but the "radeon unloaded" seems strange. Any suggestions?

Re: Cinnamon Not Working - No Panels
You got a right open source drivers , but i don't have any idea why cinnamon not working. Do you install extension from another source
Maybe you try can log to GNOME (MGSE), and uninstall cinnamon .after that check a package problem with :
if you have a unneeded package, try :
And install cinnamon again from software manager, Login to cinnamon to check if the problem exist. if there is no panel try:
change setting with :

Re: Cinnamon Not Working - No Panels
@mank_in
Followed you suggestions (in order). First time I did cinnamon --replace I got all kinds of errors and warnings, mostly related to the gs-metalX-gnome3 theme. Went back into gnome shell, changed the desktop theme from gs-metalX back to default, opened a terminal and did cinnamon --replace again. Voila! Cinnamon came up. Logged out and launched Cinnamon from the Welcome screen, and again it came up. So it is working. Many thanks. Although I don't understand how a Gnome 3 theme setting should have prevented Cinnamon from launching. But, anyway, it is fixed. Thanks again.
