Cinnamon becomes unresponsive often

Post by grifma »

Hello everyone.

I'm running Mint 17.2 on my 2012 macbook air, full hw details below. Unfortunately my mac is much less stable than it was when running osx. Although much more usable while it's stable :) Would be great to get some advice on making things more stable.

Quite often it locks up enough that the only thing I can do is kill the x server. Other times it won't even let me do that. There doesn't seem to be any particular application that's causing the x server lock up, although the complete unresponsiveness requiring a power cycle only seems to happen when running IntelliJ IDEA (Java). Cinnamon visual effects are switched off.

Perhaps I should split those into three separate posts, mentioning all in the same post incase someone else has faced similar problems with a 2012 macbook air. So far not found any useful search results, except the suggestion to switch off visual effects.

Thanks in advance!

Did you try an other desktop - like Mate or Xfce for example - to sort out if this is only related to Cinnamon?

Cinnamon has been doing the same on my Dell laptop, 2 or 3 times a day. I have to restart Cinnamon and it sucks because that closes whatever I had open. It's very annoying.

Now running KDE to check whether it's desktop manager specific.

KDE unstable also so this isn't actually a Cinnamon specific issue.

This seems to be a similar problem that is mentioned on both hardware and software Forums. Generally called screen freezes.

I had thought it was Firefox related as that was when I had the freezes (with mouse pointer movement). Then I had a freeze when FF was not running. Somewhere I saw a suggestion to use Driver Manager to set the nvidia driver. Drive manager did ndeed recommend the Nvidia-304 driver. I switched to it and the freezes became more frequent. I am back to the default now and can do nothing but keep my fingers crossed and save my work often.

The length of the freeze seems to vary and sometimes I can out wait it. Most often, it seems, I have to do a hard reboot.
