Problem solved.
I removed the fglrx with help from this article: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooti ... %20scratch

then I installed fglrx from package repo and set it up with the driver manager.

Just want to mark this as confirmed. I experienced the same issue.. the only error I could dig out in terminal mode is that the X server crashed because it didn't have a description for the HDMI Audio device attached the the card (ATI RADEON HD6790 for me) ;)
But I couldn't find adequate support to back that up, nor could I find any xorg.conf details showing the audio in that file.

I was attempting this driver to see if it fixed a bug in Tomb Raider 2013 but haven't gotten that to work. :(

UPDATE! The latest release of AMD's Catalyst Driver 15.9 released this month installs fine.. AFTER ENTIRELY PURGING THE EXISTING FGLRX DRIVERS.. ;)
Linux Mint 17.2 Rafael Cinnamon X86_64 users can download the Catalyst's .run file, run it and build the install package successfully under Ubuntu/Saucy distro.. and then install the 4 driver packages using dpkg -i

P.S. this can ALL be successfully done while in an active X-session using the currently installed FGLRX drivers then switching to the linux open source driver. ;) Which is recommended, but don't leave that X-session until you see that the 4 newly built packages are completely and successfully installed without any conflicts or unresolved dependencies.

Linux Mint 17.2 Rafael Cinnamon X86_64 users can download the Catalyst's .run file, run it and build the install package successfully under Ubuntu/Saucy distro.. and then install the 4 driver packages using dpkg -i

P.S. this can ALL be successfully done while in an active X-session using the currently installed FGLRX drivers then switching to the linux open source driver. ;) Which is recommended, but don't leave that X-session until you see that the 4 newly built packages are completely and successfully installed without any conflicts or unresolved dependencies.
is there somewhere i can find the new catalyst drivers easier? i'm very new to all this :-)
