Recently I installed Mint the Matte edition. I don't want to reinstall, however I want to preview the Cinnamon environment. So can I just add it as an option to my installation?

Some users got it to work, others got the system to break. With this combination the latter is more likely.
If you want to play with another desktop environment I recommend to install VirtualBox and create a virtual machine. Here you can test and play without risking your workhorse. If this is an option for you, I strongly recommend to use at now VB 4.3.30. The brand new version 5 needs some more polish to get really stable.
