Nemo unresponsive + huge memory usage (Mint 17.2)

Post by granric »

Had a similar issue (some other details here http://forum.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.ph ... 3#p1028099) with a former Cinnamon + Nemo version, taken from romeo repositories. Now I've made a clean update to 17.2, all standard repos, recommended kernel, and though the overall behaviour was surely mitigated, this issue is still present.

My context remains made of 4 workspaces (1 dedicated to a cpu-intensive CLI application, 1 to Thunderbird, 1 to Chrome and/or Virtualbox, and the last one to 6-8 Nemo windows and 2-3 CLI terminals) - enough RAM, so no special issue here, swap space rarely used - and the laptop remains on round the clock. inxi -Fxz to follow in a few lines.

For the first day of usage, everything appears normal - Nemo uses less than 100 MB of RAM, new windows open snappily. However, after the first day or so, Nemo becomes increasingly unresponsive:
  • new windows open with increasing lags, from seconds to minutes. After 2 days of usage, I'm finding somehow common to have to wait at least 1 full minute for a new window to appear (both for windows opened as children of former windows and for windows opened from the panel);
  • Nemo's memory usage increases, above 600 MB as of now, though cpu usage remains pretty low (10% of one out of 4 cores);
  • windows become sluggish and their content is not refreshed any more (neither spontaneously, nor via F5);
  • other running applications in the meanwhile show limited slowdowns;
  • sluggish windows and slow refreshes appear to worsen in correlation with data transfers (downloads), either from VirtualBox towards a shared folder, or via Chrome.
When the situation has reached this point, the only way out is either to restart Cinnamon or to reboot.

As an addon to the above, I've reached 1.5 GB RAM usage with Nemo, while downloading 2/3 GB of data via VirtualBox 4.30 towards a shared (=networked) folder. Same weird behaviour as with 17.1 with Cinnamon/Nemo from romeo: Nemo becomes unresponsive, existing windows no longer refresh, new windows take almost 1 minute to open. Ctrl-Alt-Esc restarts Cinnamon, but Nemo RAM footage and behaviour remains the same: had to kill it and restart, in order to regain its normal snappiness.

Am questioning myself whether networking might be one factor driving this. It is true that, compared to Mint 17.0 and 17.1, things have significantly improved; unfortunately this weird behaviour is rather annoying.

Looking for help and suggestions, thanks in advance.

Noticed this just today now as well, unclear if it was just always happening, but after approx 14 days of uptime Nemo using over 1GB RAM and became unresponsive which bought it to my attention - restarted it and it begins with about 28MB of RAM use, this has climbed over last 10 minutes to over 55MB and it also sits there using 6% of a CPU.

Edit:

I had a tidy up of files on the desktop.. deleted some stuff, emptied the rubbish bin - there was at least one hidden file on the desktop left over from I think burning a boot thumb drive, and a PDF I didn't want - this appears to have stabilised it - at least the time of writing it's been 15 minutes and it's sitting quite happily at 33.8MB ram usage - so.. perhaps worth having a clean up of the desktop for erroneous (hidden) files after all?

Checked my desktop, just in case: 9 elements overall (8 links, 1 file), no hidden junk.

Regarding Nemo footprint after a fresh boot, I normally stay below 100M for one day or so, then RAM usage increases consistently. So far, no other clue to solve this, other than reboot <ack!>

Nemo is still causing a problem. Firefox slows to a standstill until I shut down Nemo. Then all is well again.

You might want to consider trying the Mate or Xfce edition....

I've experiencing the same thing on 17.2. Nemo gets really sluggish after a few hours unless I reboot my machine. Looking at system monitor and it's currently using 800MB of memory.
