Cinnamon resets nvidia x server settings

Post by batmanasb »

Everything was fine in Mint 17.1, but after upgrading to 17.2 Cinnamon seems to overwrite my nvidia x server settings.
I saved a config to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and in the log in window my monitor is refreshing at 144Hz, but when I log in it resets to
auto (which is 60Hz). If I set it back to 1920x1080 @144Hz it works until I restart/reboot. The way I know it definitely relates to
Cinnamon is because of the new shortcut to restart Cinnamon (ctrl+alt+esc). When I restart Cinnamon my refresh rate resets to
60Hz.

Can anyone please help?

I figured out a hacky solution that works good enough for me, but I still want to figure out the real problem.
I posted it on my reddit thread here: https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmint/comm ... _settings/

Open nemo and make hidden files visible.
Enter the folder .config.
Do you have the file monitors.xml? If so, rename it, log off and back in.

I tried renaming and removing it, no effect. The settings are still correct in the login window but reset after login.

A solution was found in the reddit thread! Apparently Linux Mint's Display settings from the menu overwrite all other display configs.
So you basically have to:
*modify the display settings using nvidia-settings
*apply them
*open "Display" from the mint menu
*press "detect display" then press "apply"
*then save the nvidia-settings config file for good measure

Sorry to report but that doesn’t work... After every reboot something overwrites xorg.conf file. Even full root login doesn't work in this case.
This is a big problem especially to me cause i'm struggling to set up second VGA monitor.
I hope someone from the developer team could give us an advice.

Thanks!

Small update:

The problem is not in Cinnamon - i just tested it with KDE and Mate, so it is a Mint problem and when i run

Code: Select all

aptitude why-not nvidia-340
it shows conflict with xorg-server...

Now I'm going to test this patch for Xorg but it going to take a while:
