Nemo unresponsive + huge memory usage

Post by granric »

I'm presently using Cinnamon 2.6.7 + Nemo 2.6.5 from romeo repositories in a Mint 17.1 laptop (Dell Latitude E5550, 1920x1080 integrated Haswell-ILT chip, standard Xorg drivers).
My typical setup is made of 4 workspaces (1 dedicated to a cpu-intensive CLI application, 1 to Thunderbird, 1 to Chrome and/or Virtualbox, and the last one to 6-8 Nemo windows and 2-3 CLI terminals) - plenty of RAM, so no special issue here - and the laptop remains on round the clock.

I've found a number of improvements w/ respect to the former version contained in 17.1 (speed, snappy windows effects, general response time), however I've noticed some remaining issues along the subject of this post.

For the first day of usage, everything appears normal - Nemo uses some 100 MB of RAM, new windows open snappily. However, after the first day or so, Nemo becomes increasingly unresponsive:
  • new windows open with increasing lags, from seconds to minutes. After 2 days of usage, I'm finding somehow common to have to wait 10+ minutes (!) for a new window to appear (both for windows opened as children of former windows and for windows opened from the panel);
  • Nemo's memory usage increases, up to 1.5 GB (!), absorbing almost fully one of laptop's 4 cores (cpu in the 70/80% range);
  • windows become sluggish and their content is not refreshed any more (neither spontaneously, nor via F5);
  • Nemo becomes also unresponsive to ctrl-alt-esc - nothing happens;
  • other running applications in the meanwhile do not show any significant slowdown.
When the situation has reached this point, the only way out is either to restart Cinnamon or to reboot.

I'm attaching the output of a pmap -x, in case this may help in shedding some light on what's going on.
Any help is greatly appreciated

Please generate an overview of your system like this:
- launch a terminal window and make it fullscreen, to avoid chopped lines;
- copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
if you type: the letter F is a capital letter

Press Enter.

Copy/paste the output in your next message.

Note: using Romeo is asking for trouble. That's probably the root of your problem.

This, just after having restarted my session, since Nemo had reached approx 1Gb in memory footprint.

(EDIT) On a side note, I plan to upgrade to 17.2 in the next couple of days, in order to get rid of romeo (which, by the way, was enabled only for upgrading Cinnamon + Nemo + dependencies) and get back to a plain vanilla setup.(/EDIT)

Thanks in advance
