[SOLVED] Performance issue with EOG affecting Cinnamon?

Post by shnplr »

Hi,

Using Image Viewer (EOG) to view slideshow Cinnamon memory usage has started increasing with the size of the images viewed.
e.g.
- right now: Cinnamon memory 888.5 MiB
- double click 32MB zip (open with with archive manager). zip file is accessed on local nas (synology)
- select-all, open-with ImageViewer
- click slideshow...wait 75 x 5secs
- end: Cinnamon memory 925.9 MiB

Clicking through images manually (using Next):
- about every 1-2 file the system freezes for a few seconds at 100 %CPU (normally super fast off the HDD)
- seems to freeze at different points i.e. sometimes Image Viewer displays "opening file in /home/me/.cache" etc in status bar for a long time...

Running 'top' during freeze:
(info captured as soon as system started responding and I could focus terminal and hit ctrl-z)

Code: Select all

While pressing 'next' (as continuously as possible), Cinnamon hovers around 65-75% CPU, EOG 10-30%, file-roller 20-30%. On taking a breath, Cinnamon jumps to 80-95% for another second or 2 then drops back to 4% CPU.

Code: Select all

Cinnamon 2.4.8
Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca
3.13.0-37-generic x86_64 (64 bit)
Dual core Intel Core2 Duo CPU E8400 (-MCP-) cache: 6144 KB flags: (lm nx sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 ssse3 vmx) bmips: 11970.8

GLX Renderer: Quadro FX 1700/PCIe/SSE2 GLX Version: 3.3.0 NVIDIA 331.113 Direct Rendering: Yes
Any ideas/suggestions or other things to check much appreciated

Thanks,
Paul

p.s. Cinnamon is now 1.0GiB

Why not extract the files first, and then open them?

It doesn't matter if I copy the zip from NAS to HDD before opening or create a temp folder on HDD and extract the files and open them there as you suggested. It seems to be something relating to processing images - the zip/nas is incidental I think.

I'm not exactly sure what fixed the problem, but I've done

1. upgraded to Cinnamon 2.6.7
2. emptied trash
3. changed some settings in nemo preview

So now I can cycle through images via Image Viewer as fast as I can click or hold down the right arrow key - i.e. its back to normal - whereas previously my system froze for approx 3-4 seconds between each image.

I observed on boot Cinnamon memory started around 200MB and grew rapidly to 700MB while cycling through files. At 700MB Cinnamon memory has stopped increasing and I've cycle through about 500 more 256-512K jpegs without any further memory increase.

I'll update this post if anything changes.

Although in nemo preview settings when updating "Show text in icons" from always to never all my desktop icons suddenly disappeared:
syslog: kernel: [ 4731.124688] nemo[3030]: segfault at 1e ip 00007f3a080c9d3e sp 00007fff7bb25808 error 4 in libc-2.19.so[7f3a08032000+1bb000]
