Menu Panel disappears

Post by jonna_983 »

Hello to the forum!

Since yesterday, when after logging in, the window manager loads and I can see my icons, but the menu panel is not shown - instead you can see a sort of greyed area.
If you click on random points on the menu bar you might get some response such as the menu coming up but without colors - also clicking the icons does not work.
Clicking on the desktop icons as well has no effect.

I can switch to console and from there I quote the .xsession-errors file:
/etc/mdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...

Try running in terminal:

Code: Select all

apt-get install --reinstall libegl1-mesa

Thanks for the reply,

I have switched to MATE for the moment (by clicking the λ) and it works fine.
I am still willing to give cinnamon a chance, does your solution affect MATE or is it fail-safe?

Mate uses the same packages--so they are probably ok.
Try going back into Cinnamon and create a new user
from System Settings/Users and Groups. Log out and back in as the new user.
If everything is ok as a new user, then log out and back in as the original user.
Then you may just have to right click the panel select Troubleshoot/Restore settings to default.
None of this should affect Mate.

OK, tried your command and this is the output, it seems to fail:

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt-get install --reinstall libegl1-mesa

I probably misread your last post: I cannot login to cinnamon and do those operations because nothing works within the GUI.

When booted into Cinnamon can you open a terminal via Ctrl+Alt T?
If this opens a terminal window then:

Code: Select all

cinnamon-settings-users
should open the user group dialog.

No I couldn't open any window whatsoever when booted.

Anyways, I removed cinnamon when booted into MATE, fixed some broken packages (which was probably the cause of the errors in my previous message), re-installed my ati drivers, installed cinnamon and now it boots with the Menu panel present and working; however it has some issues - nautilus refuses to work properly.

I've decided to switch to MATE permanently, thanks for the help!
