(Desktop Icon Alignment ) How to control/customize?

Post by devrich »

Hi,

I hope this doesn't sound like a irrlevant question because it really bugs me and so far is the only thing I have any issues with so I am hoping that you can help me get a grip on it :)

I don't know how to control the alignment of the Desktop icons. I mean for instance if i move them a few pixels in a specific direction and they re-arrange in a certain way... but... then if i do the same thing in the same spot ( same pixel even ) on the icon and move the same way as before then it'll align in a different way in a different spot ( insert very confused smilie here )

Sometimes they even overlap or partially cover their text with other text from other icons ( even more confused )

I am really hoping it's just some setting(s) that i need to adjust.

This has been happening in every version of linux mint I've used from 15 through 17.1

My system(s) == all intel cpus and either amd graphics cards or onboard intel graphics chipsets.
My Distro == Linux Mint 17.1 64-bit ( also 32-bit this happens ) cinnamon desktop ( ubuntu 14.04 )

I read that topic and I didn't realize this was something that was pissing off other linux users at each other, now wonder no one was answering me... Thanks for the links, vrizov; the bug report mentioned there about the CD icon: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... +bug/12454 is very much like what I experience just by moving an icon or folder around close to others. They overlap and this gets especially noticable (randomly) if a program causes my system to hang and i have to do a hard reboot.

For your desktop icons move your mouse pointer over the icon. You should then see a sidebar popup by the icon. Move your pointer to the box shaped icon at the top and right click, hold and drag to resize the icon to any size you may desire.
Above quote from viewtopic.php?f=56&p=688088 unfortunately doesn't produce a 'sidebar popup' on MATE Qiana [well, not on this pc anyway] - it produces a menu [see* below].

Any chance please of a step-by-step guide to resize icons and make icons bear names?

*I can re-size INDIVIDUAL icons [one at a time] by RTclick> on popup menue select Resize Icon> [looks like nothing happens BUT]> LTclick on the icon suddenly gives an expanding indicator. Surely there's a place [Administration? Places?] where all the icon sizes AND labelling can be specified?
