TOP PANEL impossible to create(?)

Post by jeffpas »

One of the things I miss using Ubutnu is a panel on top of the screen where I can place shortcuts..... however I can't seem to get this to work on Linux 17 for anything.
If I right click the bottom panel and choose "Panel Settings"--> Panel Layout--> Classic (Panels at Top and Bottom) and reboot, it moves the start panel to the top [which I don't want], leaving a blank and useless panel at the bottom [which is useless].

How do you KEEP the Start panel at the bottom, and add a panel at the top of the screen to put shortcuts in, as Ubuntu has by default? Is this possible? Thanks much.

Okay I've accepted the menu at the top, I can live with that. But how do you pin things to the blank panel at the bottom? There is no setting to 'unlock' it. Anything I drag there has big white X. Panel EDIT mode just locks the menu so it doesn't work and still the white X.

I don't see any explanation on the web anywhere.
Why have a task panel you can't use?

Looks like my reply disappered(??) Anyway it looks like all you can do is right click a menu item and Add to Panel, then right click the panel and enter Panel Edit Mode to move it. You can't drag and drop or justify apparently but it works well enough as a workaround..... thanks.

When you make the classic layout with a panel at the top and at the bottom, all applets get at first placed into the top panel.

If you now enter the panel edit mode, you can drag any applet from the top to the bottom (or back), from right to the middle or to the left and vice versa. So it is now problem, to bring the menu to the bottom. Don't forget to leave the panel edit mode afterwards.

If you want to add launchers to the panel, you must have the panel launcher applet added to the panel. It is by default already there (except, if you have removed it). By default it already contains launchers for firefox, nemo and terminal. The easiest way to add more launchers there is going into the menu, right click the launcher, you want add to the panel launcher applet, and choose the appropriate command.

Inside the panel launcher applet you can move the icons in a new order just to your liking. Hold the left mouse button pressed for some time, otherwise the systems assumes a single click and launch the program. By right clicking an icon inside the applet you can remove it.

Actually if you have the panel launcher applet enabled you can just open the menu and drag the applications from the menu and drop them in the applet.

Thanks guys... coming from Ubuntu there are some things to get used to. But all in all I'm impressed with the system....... it loads fast and runs fast, has a great interface and so far has been bug free!
I liked Ubuntu but not their new Unity desktop and their upgrades have been murder. Also many of the Wine programs I loaded there stopped working after a few months or had problems, and with so many apps still only running on Windows... which I'm trying to get away from...... that was important.
