I'm seeing a weird issue on the latest Mint installation (fully up to date, amd64), where moving around windows is smooth, then choppy, then smooth, then choppy. Like, you can keep dragging around a window, and it gets smooth and choppy every 3 seconds of dragging the window around. I'm not sure what is causing this. I would rather not use FGLRX as it doesn't work well on this computer.
If this computer uses Unity, Xfce, or Mate, this issue doesn't occur. It's only happening on Cinnamon. Ideas?
Linux Mint 17.1 64-bit
Cinnamon 2.4.5
Kernel 3.13.0-37-generic
CPU: Intel Core i7-2635QM CPU @ 2.00GHz x 4
8GB RAM
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6400M.

the DEs - Unity - Xfce - Mate -- all use less resources than Cinnamon does. ..
- you need better < hardware > resources in order to run a Cinnamon DE.
so, either use one of the lighter DEs or - upgrade, probably, the video card.
or - the AMD drivers for the current video card.
- using the Mate DE - control center - hardware - additional drivers.
does that bring up any additional driver - message(s) ?.

Re: Slow performance when dragging windows
It's a laptop, not really a choice. I don't believe Cinnamon requires more resources than what the GPU is capable of delivering.
Also, in what way does Unity actually use less resources on the GPU itself? They all have the same silly drop shadows, translucent windows, etc. These kind of effects have been used for many years with Apple on OS X, and by 2005 they were doing it just fine on Radeon 9200's for example, with no issues of moving a window around.
I also don't believe though that my Radeon 6400M is incapable of working faster.
I did some research and found that this is a open bug actually: https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/2465
I do indeed have the option of using FGLRX, but that hasn't historically worked well and usually results in no X startup. I'd rather not touch that. Open source drivers have worked well actually, vsync and all.

Re: Slow performance when dragging windows
Tried FGLRX anyway, and the performance is worse, way worse.
Re: Slow performance when dragging windows
i think its a bug in 17.1
try turning off: Disable compositing for full screen windows in "general" settings.
give it a few seconds.
it happens on Nvidia too.

Re: Slow performance when dragging windows
On Intel onboard graphics I had
CLUTTER_PAINT=disable-clipped-redraws:disable-culling
CLUTTER_VBLANK=True
in /etc/environment
This is supposed to remove tearing for Nvidia cards but
is not needed for Intel. Instead it hurts window dragging
performance in Linux mint 17.1 Cinnamon.
One may also uncheck "Disable compositing för full-screen windows"
in System Settings/Preferences/General
With this done I have good performance in Cinnamon and
it is also good for video playback.

Re: Slow performance when dragging windows
Oddly, checking the 'Disable compositing for full-screen windows' in General settings is what fixed it for me. I didn't have this issue on my 17.1 install on my laptop with very similar Intel hardware as the one i'm on now. Go figure.
Re: Slow performance when dragging windows
'Disable compositing for full-screen windows' worked for me on this old intel Dell,
but I did have to restart to see the improvement.
