GUI stop responding to anything
Hi,
I just installed Mint petra. Everything is great, except. Sometimes the whole GUI stop responding. The mouse still cab be moved, but nothing else works. The whole computer does not hang, e.g. Spotify continues.
I have found that I can actually do
Ctrl-Alt-F7
Alt-F1
login
killall last_application
where last_application is the "top application" in the GUI. Then I can do Alt-F8 and get back to the GUI and it starts responding again.
So far I have seen this issue with Gedit and Firefox being last_application. It is really annoying. Unfortunately I do not know what else to report. If anyone have any input it would be greatly appreciated! Please let me know if there is any information missing. Petra is up to data as of today.

Re: GUI stop responding to anything
Why did you install Mint 16, which is no longer supported? You really should move to 17, which will be supported until 2019. I have seen Firefox freeze occasionally when I have a lot of tabs open, especially if several of them have flash or javascript.

open menu
type "keyboard"
open the keyboard applet, and go to shortcuts.
click "add custom shortcut"

Name: Restart Gnome
Command: gnome-shell --replace

now double click on the first "unassigned" and press F4

when it becomes unresponsive... try that.

Thanks,
But I han't even got gnome-shell installed. I am running cinnomon, so I do not think that will help.

Re: GUI stop responding to anything
Hi Ravn,
I had similar problems with Nouveau driver on my MBP. AFAIK, it is a known problem (on some NVidia cards, especially on laptops - not on all of them I think). But in my case, the whole desktop froze, killing an application does not help; but then again, I didn't actually troubleshoot the problem that much, but installed the closed source nvidia driver quite soon instead.
Also, on a plain Cinnamon (Rebecca), I also have:
I believe that is because Cinnamon is based on Gnome 3 (and MATE in Gnome 2), but I could be in the wrong.
Cheers!

Re: GUI stop responding to anything
Hi guys,
Thanks for your replys. Neither of these things seem to work unfortunately. I have the Intel HD3000 graphics adapter in the computer, so Nvidia should not matter. Regarding the restart cinnomin thing'e, nothing happend when pressing the short key
Any one else?

Re: GUI stop responding to anything
I have exactly the same problem, but its frequence has greatly diminished after
updating to Mint Cinnamon 17.1 version (only once in two weeks, before was almost daily) from 17.0.
The problem is not related to Nvidia. In fact i am using the Intel 4th generation integrated card (I7 cpu)
with standard kernel drivers.
As described in the first report only the mouse seems alive but no interaction with the desktop is possible.
It happens often when banshee or firefox are opened but this because they are the most frequently used applications
by me. The applications remain alive (i.e. banshee continues to play, firefox to do its work, etc).
I have the possibility to go with Contr-Alt-F2 to the shell and kill the opened top application, after
with Contr-Alt-F8, when returning to desktop, all return normal without no need to reboot. I have not
found any particular error in the log files (at least for X11) after the error appears but i shall check better at next
error.
This is an almost annoying bug for this nice distribution and should be interesting
if Mint developpers could resolve it.

Re: GUI stop responding to anything
This description by enry52 is very accurate and coincide exactly wth mine. I can add that to me this only see to happen when a new window pops up when a new program is started. Also today I tried to view an attached PDF from Thunderbird. Onece the Evince window opended above happened several times in a row. Getting the GUI back up by doing a killall evince from the Ctrk-Alt-Fxx-trick. However, rebooting the system, I could view the same PDF without any problem.enry52 wrote:I have exactly the same problem, but its frequence has greatly diminished after

Thus, this bug, which it for sure is! is quite ellusive. But it really spoils the Linux Mint experience, for me making the system almose unusable.
Re: GUI stop responding to anything
Hi,
I have the same problem since I installed 17.1. Mostly it seems to be VLC but also other programs like FireFox or screen recording software (SSR) are freezing the desktop. I do have an old Nvidia graphicscard which have me served about 10 years now. Untill this version I had no problems at all. I do have the Nvidia driver installed.
However, I do not need to kill anything. I have to wait just a few minutes and then I can work again. It seems that alt+tab unfreeze things but I can not confirm it but I will try it the next time. If I have a succes next time I will let you know.

Re: GUI stop responding to anything
I am experiencing something similar with 17.1, on 2 different computers, both with stretched, dual monitors desktop.
The symptoms are as described above, the mouse pointer still moves, but no matter where you click, it seems unresponsive, windows don't activate, menus don't unroll and keypresses don't appear in the editor. My initial thought was that my desktop was crashing or about to crash, however it keeps displaying alerts, playing songs or videos, it really feels like some weird focus issue.
Workaround that works for me: when it happens, I press the windows key on the keyboard, it opens the start menu, the search field gains focus and becomes responsive to keypresses, I click anywhere on the screen to dismiss the start menu and everything is back to normal.

Re: GUI stop responding to anything
I am also experiencing some similar problems today after installing several system updates through update manager.
Re: GUI stop responding to anything
I also experience this. I don't have a separate video card, I'm an onboard Intel video card, and I'm using the standard kernel drivers.
I have tried installing cinnamon on top of Ubuntu 14.10 and I've tried running it as part of a Linux Mint 17.1 installation. Both had similar results.
This happens about once every 2 or 3 hours of computer use. My symptoms sound similar to others. When it freezes, I can move my mouse around, but I can't click on anything.
I can type Ctrl+Alt+F6 and get a console, but no matter what I kill, I can't seem to recover the session. This does not just happen when launching new applications, I get this often when hitting "Alt+Tab". The alt-tab windows show up, but then it immediately freezes. That might be a coincidence, it seems to happen fairly randomly, Firefox, VLC, nemo, alt-tab, just about anything.

Re: GUI stop responding to anything
My problem went away after a new round of updates via update manager. So I assumed it was fixed as part of these updates.
Re: GUI stop responding to anything
The problem stays here, no matter what updates I'm doing. In my case most of the time this problem apears when using Firefox, but I'm not sure it has something to do with it.begun wrote:My problem went away after a new round of updates via update manager. Re: GUI stop responding to anything
Actually it seem it went away for me too. I have not expereinced this in some weeks now. But my previous experience was that this happend mostly when the laptop did not have an external screen connected to it, and I have mostly had the computer in the docking station the last weeks, so I'm not entirely sure.begun wrote:My problem went away after a new round of updates via update manager. Re: GUI stop responding to anything
Still here for me, exactly as described above, and I can't seem to figure out a pattern for when it happens. It does quite a lot when plugging in a new USB device, I can see the system is recognising it then it freezes and nemo pops open after a few minutes. But sometimes, like just now, it froze when I CLOSED a pdf file. I rebooted after more than 10 minutes of waiting. Come on, what is happening. Please don't make me have to go back to Ubuntu!
Any idea how to detect a cause? From what I read, it's not evident to log the problem.
Thanks to whoever can help making Mint usable again.

Re: GUI stop responding to anything
Same problem here, bough new laptop (asus x550L) , installed linux mint 17.1 64 bits
upgraded bios
upgrade kernel
I have tried with:
NVidia graphics card enabled + noveau driver --> problem detected
NVidia graphics card enabled + nvidia driver 311 --> problem detected
Nvidia graphis card disabled (using on board intel graphics) --> problem detected
I've seen this issue with firefox, file manager , but this are the programs i use most ... not sure what i should report here
Woraround: Restart X (ctrl + alt +back)
I'll try the other method reported on this thread:
1) get a console (ctrl + alt + f1)
2) login
3) kill last application ( killall "the top application ")
4) return to desktop (ctrl + alt + f8)
