Resolution sudden stuck at 640 x 380

I've been running Mint 17/Cinnamon successfully for several months on my Zareason/Nvidia latop. After a update yesterday, instead of 1920 x 1080, my screen resolution comes up at 640 x 380.
After logging in I get a pop stating,

Cinnamon has crashed. Do you want to restart it?

Clicking Yes does not good. The prompt reappears again and again. I tried down grading the Nvidia driver from 331.113 to 331.38, but that did not good.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm at a lose.

It may be something more complex than the nvidia driver, possibly involving an xorg update.

I've never looket at my update history but apparently you can find it in /var/log/apt as mentioned here:

You'll probably want to know exactly what video card you have too. See:

And search ubuntuforums and askubuntu for any problems with your card in 14.04. I often search their stuff for mint related issues.

Thanks for the reply. The graphics card is Nvidia Gefore GT 650M. I've run Mint 17 ever since it came out without a problem until three days ago.

I also have the same issue after conducting some regular updates. I have a Nvidia GeForce 310M and was using the nvidia-331 driver. A temporary fix is to go into your Driver Manager, select the xserver-xorg-videa-nouveau driver, and reboot. This will at least make your computer usuable, though I am unable to play Steam games and I imagine other graphics intensive software won't work.

Hopefully a fix to this botched update is somewhere in the pipeline.

The xserver-xorg-videa-nouveau driver still left me in 640x380. I tried installing the nvidia-340 manually by downloading it from the the nvidia site; however, the result was the same
