I am running Mint 17 on an ASUS mobo with an NVIDIA Ge210 GFX card. I am using Nouveau driver. See below for more details re setup.
Problem is that cinnamon has become very flaky in the last 2 weeks. On resume from suspend I do not see a desktop. X11 seems to start OK, because I can move the mouse and use the keyboard to open terminals (CTL-ALT-F1 etc) but there is no taskbar, or hot corners etc.
Once in a terminal I can even issue a startx cmd and get my usual desktop that way. Then when I log out (from the desktop) I get back to the terminal again.
But the CTL-ALT-F7 just shows my either a black screen with a moveable mouse cursor, or my background image with a moveable mouse cursor.
Examining the dmesg and /var/log/Xorg.0.log files I don't see anything that looks suspicious (but I don't know what to look for anyway).
So: Q1 How do I restart cinnamon from a terminal?
Q2 anyone else having a problem with cinnamon? if so what is the best desktop to use with Mint 17?
