VNC (x11vnc or vino) goes to black screen

Post by jlbprof »

I have not been able to get vnc working for years, using various versions of Mint and Ubuntu before that.

- Linux Mint 17/Cinnamon 32bit
- In Virtualbox VM on Window 7 Pro Host 64bit, not headless

I have tried it with vino (using desktop sharing) gave up on that, then installed x11vnc.

When I connect to the vnc server, all I see is black. The main screen works, my mouse can activate things, yet I see nothing on the vnc viewer.

Is anyone able to get this to work?

Please let me know what you need and I will post it.

FYI, I tried searching for vnc on this forum, but apparently it is a too common of a word to search for.

Thanx

Julian

I use x11vnc alot at work. I do get the same thing you are describing from time to time, not sure what causes it, but usually if i close it and reconnect it will work the second time. (Use a startup command with parameters "sudo x11vnc -loop" so that you are able to reconnect without restarting the vnc server.

I had nothing but trouble with vino.

How about realVNC? They have a .deb on their site.

I use realvnc as a viewer, and I tried tightvnc as a viewer as well.

Something fundamental is wrong but I have no idea.

Its funny i use vnc at work a bunch but never tried at home. Was bored yesterday and tried and also got a black screen. Did a search and found the following in an opensuse forum. Try commenting out the ivp6 line as show below. After i did that i no longer had the black screen at home. (i use remmina for my viewer)

~>cat /etc/hosts

# special IPv6 addresses
#::1 localhost ipv6-localhost ipv6-loopback
