I can fix the sound problem but by manually doing pulseaudio --kill , pulseaudio --start.
Are you setting your volume down to zero? On my setup it muted the output and left it muted if you turn the volume down to zero (w/taskbar icon/slider using pavucontrol mixer); had to manually unmute it with pavucontrol. (Past tense because I uninstalled pulseaudio: the only useful thing it did was allowed recording of "what you hear", and I found another way to do that).
If you don't find a muting problem, try deleting your ~/.pulse directory.
