Can't change desktop background

Post by martijnende »

Hello all,

I'm using Mint 16 Cinnamon x64 (Cinnamon v. 2.0.14) and it worked fine over the past couple of months, but yesterday something strange happened. While I wanted to add a keyboard shortcut for opening the System Monitor, the computer appeared to be frozen for 30 seconds. After that, I could use it again, but the background had changed back to the default 3D-ish Linux Mint wallpaper. When I want to change this background, I

1) don't see any default wallpapers that I could normally select
2) can browse for a custom image, but when I click "open", nothing happens

I have read reports with similar symptoms and tried a couple of suggested fixes, but nothing worked so far. Also, I can still change other settings, such as the Theme, so Cinnamon is not entirely broken (I guess).

I don't know what kind of information you require for further diagnosis, but please ask and I'll deliver. Thanks!

EDIT: I can change the wallpaper by visiting the desired image in Nemo and right-click "Set as wallpaper"

The best solution is to install Mint 17. You are not getting any security updates for Mint 16 any more.

Also, to be released Mint 17.1 (Cinnamon 2.4) is going to have slideshow support, which will be an easy upgrade from Mint 17 due to new LTS strategy. :D
