Unable to find this in the settings, or a related request. I'm currently running Mint 17 Cinnamon desktop and using a Dell keyboard with a volume control knob. When I adjust the volume the rather large overlay appears showing the adjustment. Though it's nice, it just too big and often covers the video I'm watching. Is there a way to remove it, or use the simular overlay found un ubuntu 14? I've trchanged themes, without change.

My Tosh laptop has a volume control wheel on the front edge which I never use. The control is flakey (probably due to lack of use) and if it's in the wrong position that HUD you're talking about randomly pops up. Took me a while to figure out what was going on, and while researching a possible bug fix I bookmarked the following forum thread. Maybe this will be of value to you:
