Terminal Window blank

Post by domz »

The best way to describe the issue is to post a screenshot. Whenever I open up terminal, the screen is blank.

I am using Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon 64Bit

Image

I also have a problem when trying to open some applications such as "software sources". Whenever I try to open it, it just freezes the entire window.

Best I could do since i can't copy and paste from xterm

Try starting Driver Manager, wait for it a bit, and see if it finds a "recommended" graphics driver. If it does (it will be top of the list), select it and apply this one. Then do a restart so it takes effect.

Can't start the manager, but I install nvidia-343 (I had previously had nvidia-340) and rebooted and still has the same effect.

That might be a step forward. Run "nvidia-xconfig" from Terminal (or console Ctrl-Alt-F1 if that's how you're doing it), then reboot. It will create an xorg.config file which is the last (and necessary) piece of the driver install for nVidia.

See what effect it has if any. You should now also be able to run "Nvidia Xserver Settings" from somewhere in your main menu after the reboot. If this doesn't straighten out your Terminal window we can try changing terminal profile settings. Cinnamon 17 64-bit, right?

EDIT: Opps, forget this. See posts below, as Nomko pointed out, the nVidia driver is not for your graphics controller...

That won't work. The reason for that is that domz doesn't have any Nvidia graphic device onboard:
Graphics: Intel 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller
X.Org: 1.15.1 intel (unloaded: fbdev,vesa) FAILED: nouveau Resolution: 1920x1080@60.1hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Haswell Mobile GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 10.3.0-devel Direct Rendering: Yes
As you can see here, the nouveau driver failed.

You can change the Nvidia driver as much as you want, you still get the same effect. You don't have a Nvidia Graphic GPU/videocard onboard but an Intel Integrated Graphical Controller. Try this: https://sites.google.com/site/usertipsl ... hic-driver

You're right, he threw me when he said he installed one for Nvidia. I wasn't paying attention and just assumed he had one in there. His Graphics output from inxi clearly (well, not so clearly, but it's there ) indicates the Intel 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller. So forget the nVidia driver, it will not work for that controller.

Use what Nomko gave you.

I have a NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX850M http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabook ... fications/

I am using bumblee-nvidia to change between intel and nvidia

ALso, thanks, I tried the recommended graphic driver here but it still failed (even after reboot).

You have 2 graphics cards? Can you do...

Code: Select all

lspci
Your inxi from days ago only shows one card, that's typical though. Is there an option in BIOS to disable the on-board Intel controller? Sometimes if yo can disable one like that all your issues will go away. (Once you get the driver reloaded etc that is. It could be not loading right, or maybe it did if both graphics controllers are fighting with each other for control)

If I try both using a test file ( glxspheres), they both work fine:

OK so you do definitely have both cards. I can't tell anything from that test or figure out what you're doing in there because the screen shot is too small.
