Graphics missing

Post by shieldfire »

It seems when I added Cinnamon to Min 17 KDE that I didn't get the proper graphics installed.
In the package managers everything looks ok, but the desktop is "crude" and the start menu is lacking icons for logout/exit etc. There are no background images provided either.

So how do I fix this, apologies if this is somewhere answered - in a bit of a hurry atm.
If it is, just point me to the page =)

Some older hardware has trouble with Cinnamon.
Please post the result of the command:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
Mint 18.2 Cinnamon, Quad core AMD A8-3870 with Radeon HD Graphics 6550D, 8GB DDR3, Ralink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI
Linux Linx 2018

Will do when I get back to work. KDE works as intended though, if Cinnamon has higher requirements than KDE then that would be an area of improvement =)

Is there some reason you chose to use 32 bit Mint on your 64 bit machine?

It sounds like the "crude" desktop is the gnome fallback that you get when Cinnamon is not running.
Try the commands:

Code: Select all

cinnamon --version

Code: Select all

cinnamon --replace
Mint 18.2 Cinnamon, Quad core AMD A8-3870 with Radeon HD Graphics 6550D, 8GB DDR3, Ralink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI

Code: Select all

marskj@fsydit-Mint17:~ > cinnamon --version
Cinnamon 2.2.16
--replace produces a bad crash. I'd provide the errors/backtrace but it locks up X totally, so the only way of getting any response from the box seems to be ctrl+alt+backspc

From what I can see it complains about Mint-X and themes, but the themes are installed.

The wrong theme can crash Cinnamon. Are you using the default theme?
cinnamon --replace should simply refresh the display.

I reinstalled the themes package through the package management tool. Unfortunately i also installed mint-meta-cinnamon.
One of those fixed the problem and now everything looks and behaves as expected.
Thanks for the tip =)
