How do you prevent opened applications from showing up in the panel?
I am planning to replace taskbar with a dock or something.
But I would prefer to keep the system tray visible
I searched here and when someone asked, it turned in to a dock apps discussion
I suspect its very much possible, since I saw few cinnamon desktops with various docks and panel showing and applications launched,
but nothing showing on the panel

It's the "window list" applet that is responsible for showing opened applications on panel. Right click on any panel and open "add applets to panel" and disable "window list" applet by right clicking on it and selecting "disable".

Thanks, seems so obvious now.
