How can I connect 2 Mint 17 computers with rdesktop?

Post by flanna »

I have various computers running Linux Mint 17. My main computer uses Cinnamon DE and runs software that I would like to view from the other Mint computers at other locations. I already have rdesktop installed.

Could anyone explain exactly how I can set up a remote desktop viewing (with mouse and keyboard control) from another location. i.e. the main computer is in one town and I want to access it when I am in another town (from a computer running Mint 17 with either Cinnamon or Mate). I'm sure this is easy to do but I have no idea how to do it.

Thanks, but it doesn't explain exactly what to do if you use Mint 17.

There is no Remote Desktop Program in the menu system. The nearest that I can find is Desktop Sharing Preferences, it looks similar to the Ubuntu program in the linked Ubuntu post.

If I check the boxes for "Allow other users to view your desktop" and "Allow other users to control your desktop" I do not get to see the IP address needed to view this computer. Where do I find the IP address from? Do I need to install some desktop viewing software? How do I find this computer from another computer in a different town?

what you are trying to do is a lot more complicated then just remote desktop on the same network, you would need to your internal IP, the external one (from your ISP) the one form the remote PC and so on.
An easier solution for less experienced use is teamviewer. It takes care of all of this and works really well for remote access across different networks and it's free for home users ( I use it with my relatives to maintain their PCs both on windows and linux)
All you need to know is if you are using a 64 or 32 bit OS (win or linux)
Mint 17 is based on ubuntu 14.04 so installation instructions are the same.
