Hello,
I installed Linux Mint Debian Edition (64b) with Cinnamon, and found a little annoying bug.
I cannot set vlc as the default player for mp4 files. It does, however, work for mkv. So, I right click on the file, choose "open with another program". Under suggested programs VLC is listed, so I click on it and click on "Set as default". It is not saved, it jumps back to "Video Player". For mkv files it does set vlc as default.
Why would this be dependent on the file type?

Re: Can't set VLC as default player for mp4
Deb1 Mate LMDE I have the same issue. I am guessing it's a "sudo" needed issue.
Hmm open folder as admin set default - - works.
yep I had to be admin to set the default.
Problem is when in as not root it is still default movieplayer not vlc. I log in as root and it is set as vlc as default but won't actually launch when double clicked. Seems vlc is missing a codec???

Did you try right click -> properties -> open with? I think that's how it worked in my Cinnamon install ... I'm on Mate now.

Hoser yes that is what the entire conversation has been about.

Experiencing the same issue on LM 17.1 Cinnamon. I tried accessing the folder as root, which enabled me to change the default program, but when I opened the folder as a user the preffered application was still banshee for .m4v files
