Gdk-WARNING: cinnamon-session: Fatal IO error 11

Post by MeganVonTinCan »

I'm having a problem with mdm restarting when I navigate to a particular webpage using FireFox. I've searched the forums and similar problems have been reported a while back and either Mesa or video drivers were thought to be the cause, although no one seemed to be absolutely sure. Most users reported intermittent problems, but my problem is 100% repeatable. Here's what I do:
1. Turn on PC and login
2. Open FireFox
3. Navigate to http://www.quirky.com/how-it-works
4. mdm restarts, brings me back to login page, and syslog reports the following:
cinnamon-session[3424]: Gdk-WARNING: cinnamon-session: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.#012
mdm[3407]: WARNING: mdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0

5. I log back in, open FireFox and navigate back to http://www.quirky.com/how-it-works, and the page loads fine - no crash, no problems whatsoever.

I've repeated these steps at least 10 times now with exactly the same results. I haven't been able to resolve the issue (obviously) but shouldn't the fact that the problem goes away after logging back in be a clue?

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 20#p589482 - As suggested here, you can try software rendering to see if this is a graphics related issue.

Looks like it could possibly be java related issue since yours is occuring while opening firefox? Not sure.

I second this BUG.. It's super annoying.

If I click the link in firefox (Chrome works fine), my laptop relog me closing all my unsaved work, so it's very DANGEROUS.

This same thing happens on
https://play.spotify.com/collection/playlists

Did you filled any bug report to LM team so I could contribute more related ?

My crash log.

It's happening both with cinnamon/ cinnamon (sw render).

Update: If I create a new user and use Firefox there the system holds (Even after restart).
So possible solution may be to restart firefox to defaults and set settings from clean firefox..
I'll do it later on, cause I am heavy browser user so for me it's pain to setup everything.

Hi,

I just recently upgraded to LM 17.1 from LM 17. Cinnamon 64bit version.

I just encountered the same problem. I was typing a mail mid-way in Thunderbird (31.3.0), then suddenly Cinnamon crashed and MDM restarted. The mail I was typing was unsaved. I had to retype it afterwards. Fortunately it was not much. But I do agree that this is dangerous. Anyway, here's my log. Can anyone see what is wrong? Is it the graphics driver? I remember there was an update for the NVIDIA driver recently. Should I try reinstalling the propriety driver from Driver Manager? Thanks all.

I reset firefox to defaults completly, it didn't work.

However, updating today *libdrm* packages did solved the problem, I also updated level 4 and 5 packages of xorg server.

I'm no longer crashing on the quirky url. The crashes are no longer present, but it presented a new bug, and I can no longer resume from sleep, it messes my graphics

My X (or rather, the display) restarts with the same output in syslog. Using LM 17.2, Cinnamon 2.6.13, with an i915 chipset. For me it's reproduced by
- opening a certain PNG file in gThumb (have found 2 so far)
- starting a crop
- dragging the crop frame to a particular border of the image (for one file it's the lower, for the other it's the left)

Over on the Arch forums, I found a similar discussion where cinnamon throws a "Fatal IO error 11" (although with different causes and different effect)
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=172359

What's interesting is that people there report the issue being fixed by following the instructions in this Github issue's discussion:
https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/2436

Some suggest updating cinnamon, which (as we can see) isn't the actual solution. Therefore I think the relevant comment here is third from last:
Neither of those worked, but what did work was removing .local/share/cinnamon
and the Arch user gbc921 is reporting that
Actually, what was causing trouble was my win7-menu applet:
http://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/applets/view/84
http://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/applets/view/78
[...] I just removed the win7-menu folder inside
~/.local/share/cinnamon/applets
All the applets I use are Cinnamon's own, except for one (which I installed after the problem started). So it must be an applet which isn't being used? I'll start eliminating and see.

No luck so far, but just to help people identify that they have the same issue, here's a list of situations where this crash occurs for me:

- reproducably
-- Dragging a "crop" window in gThumb to the edge of the picture
-- Scrolling down in a particular PDF with the Firefox PDF viewer
- sometimes
-- toggling the touchpad in settings
-- shortly after waking up
- once
-- while typing into the search bar in Firefox
-- while watching a video on YouTube
-- after a long freeze
-- without any apparent reason
