mdmwebkit - high cpu usage (Mint 15 Cinnamon)

Post by lehjr »

Anyone else have really high cpu usage (mdmwebkit 40-45% + Xorg 50-53%) on the default login screen? I don't know why this is happening, but I assume this is connected to the stability issue I've had, where the longer I leave the machine on the login screen, the more unstable it is after I log in, and if I leave it long enough (maybe 45 minutes or so) on the login screen, the machine won't respond at all.

Assuming this isn't normal (which is hard to believe it is), can someone at least point me in the right direction as to which logs may hold a clue or have some ideas as far as troubleshooting goes?

Machine specs:
ECS IC780M-A2 (V1.0A)
AMD Athlon(tm) II X3 445
8GB RAM
Some low end Radeon X2400 PRO 256MBpcie video card

I've decided to use one of the GDK style login screens until this can be resolved. And for anyone interested, I did try the resolution in the "Greeter application appears to be crashing" thread http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=208&t=135417, but ended up with no noticeable difference, right before an update rendered cinnamon useless. As long as I have another login option, I won't make much of a fuss over the broken one.

because of overheating I downgraded to earlier AMD Catalyst driver and Mint13. Look, if your GPU is supported by the newest kernel.

I stopped using the fglrx driver when they dropped support for devices they're still selling as new, that and having to be stuck using older kernels and even Xorg because of the inability to keep the driver updated even for the newest devices.

Currently, I'm using kernel 3.11.1-031101-generic from the Ubuntu mainline ppa (and this does perform quite well), but I've had this issue since installing Mint right out of the box. A heating issue might be a side effect that I haven't really investigated much, as I have the BIOS set to shutdown on overheating, but obviously there are other components aside from the CPU that can overheat and affect stability.

I tried one of the GDM style login screens, and it does resolve the high CPU + xorg usage, but there is still the lingering stability issue from leaving the machine at the login screen for any period of time. I did try watching the memory usage, and it doesn't look like there is a memory leak, so I don't know what is wrong.

I observe the same issue in Linux Mint 16 Petra (Mate): mdmwebkit ~50 % CPU and Xorg ~30 % CPU.

I'm using a laptop with Pentium M and Intel graphics card.

Should this be reported as a bug?

I am seeing the exact same issue on Mint 16 and an Intel i5 with HD4x00 graphics. This should almost certainly be reported as a bug.

In the mean time, could someone report a XDM that they have used that does remedy this -- a specific alternative package? Thanks.

Hmm, since I had the screensaver lock the screen, it's happening for me to, using Petra 16 MATE edition.

It's not good, is it?

This was while both users were logged in, BTW, so mdmwebkit and Xorg were busy talking to themselves.

Rebooting has stopped it, for now, even though I've used the login screen three times (me, switching to second user, and back to me).

I'm using the binary ATI/AMD drivers on a A6 CPU's GPU, so 'reasonably recent'.

My solution has been to switch the login screen to be the GTK one.

I'm sure there are people who need (or even want) to have fancy HTML5-enabled login screens, but I am not one of them.

I am having this problem, cpu bounces around 15% until I actually do something then both cpu are on 99% 98% and doesnt matter what processes I kill, I have to reboot and monitor for 15mins or so.

Not sure why xorg and cinnamon use 35% and 55% of the cpu when I am only running miniscule midori??

Just a "me too". Linux Petra - Xorg was something like 60-70%, and mdmwebkit 30-40%. Switching to gtk login screen killed it.

I posted about this a while ago. I have a power meter connected to my PC

on the HTML login screen idle power is over 100W on full APU load.

this needs resolving, it would be hideous if this were run on a laptop and it would drain the battery.

I just installed Mint yesterday and noticed this, so this message is just another "me too." Is this being worked on? Switching from Windows to Linux shouldn't make my electric bill go up. :)

Just to confirm, a Mint 17 (XFCE) installation does the very same in my VirtualBox. I simply removed MDM (since I use the system via ssh/XWin), and later changed the boot options to "quiet text", so that plymouthd doesn't take another 4% CPU usage. Now the system is nice and quiet...

Hello, 7enderhead.

You will have noticed that this thread is about "mdmwebkit - high cpu usage (Mint 15 Cinnamon)", a very old issue.

2 years after the thread was started, you report the same problem hitting you in a VM that runs Mint 17 XFCE.
Are we sure this has got the same root cause?
It might be caused by the graphics resources which you granted to your VM. Who knows.

The reason why I doubt that it is simply the old bug from Mint 15 times is this statement in the "New features in Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon" webpage - and this will apply to all 4 desktop environments, because MDM is common to all: Section "Login Screen"
The background animation uses less CPU usage
You might also change from the HTML login screen to the GDM login screen which may be less fancy, but which will be less demanding with respect to resources.

Kind regards,
Karl

just seen the same behaviour. I'd left my login screen untouched after the computer booted this morning and have just connected to it using ssh.
Screenshot shows mdmwebkit eating my cpu.
